Amygdalostriatal transition zone neurons encode sustained cue responses to guide defensive behaviors
We identify the amygdalostriatal transition zone (ASt) as a genetically distinct region that plays a previously unappreciated role in conditioned fear responses. We find that ASt neurons show sustained responses to shock-predictive cues and are both necessary and sufficient for the expression of defensive behaviors.

Control of innate olfactory valence by segregated cortical amygdala circuits
eLife Assessment This fundamental manuscript describes how the posterolateral cortical amygdala (plCoA) generates appetitive or aversive behaviors in response to odors. By combining optogenetic stimulation, single-cell RNA sequencing, and spatial analysis, the authors identify a topographically organized circuit within plCoA that governs these behaviors. The manuscript shows convincingly that multiple features (spatial, genetic, and projection) contribute to overall population encoding of valence.

Spain Was Different: Tourism Under Franco Original
South of the Pyrenees lies the holidaymakers’ Utopia’, promised a 1958 Thomas Cook brochure: ‘a spectacular, flamboyant kingdom of the sun’. The kingdom was Spain, but the copywriter failed to mention that this particular ‘utopia’ also happened to be under the control of a fascist regime. When Francisco Franco died in November 1975 the enduring image of the country he had ruled for almost four decades was of a tourist’s paradise, not a totalitarian no-go area.

Control of innate olfactory valence by segregated cortical amygdala circuits
Abstract Animals perform innate behaviors that are stereotyped responses to specific evolutionarily relevant stimuli in the absence of prior learning or experience. These behaviors can be reduced to an axis of valence, whereby specific odors evoke approach or avoidance. The cortical amygdala (plCoA) mediates innate attraction and aversion to odor. However, little is known about how this brain area gives rise to behaviors of opposing motivational valence.

Surgery vs Observation for Patients With Small Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumors
The incidence of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs) has risen more than 6-fold over the last several decades, likely because of widespread use of advanced imaging studies for abdominal complaints. A subject of ongoing controversy is how to best manage small (≤2 cm), incidentally discovered PNETs. Although most PNETs behave in an indolent fashion, some lesions will manifest more aggressive behavior.

Photoconductive mechanism of IR-sensitive iodized PbSe thin films via strong hole-phonon interaction and minority carrier diffusion
Abstract Photoconductive PbSe thin films are highly important for mid-infrared imaging applications. However, the photoconductive mechanism is not well understood so far. Here we provide additional insight on the photoconductivity mechanism using transmission electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron microscopy, and electrical characterizations. Polycrystalline PbSe thin films were deposited by a chemical bath deposition method.
