A former bank teller from Valley Stream has been charged in an identity theft scheme where businesses and individuals had more than $1.6 million stolen from their accounts using debit cards and wire transfers. Darren Stephenson, 41, was arrested on Thursday in Brooklyn and charged in Manhattan federal court with one count of bank fraud conspiracy and one count of aggravated identity theft.

A Mount Sinai business owner was sentenced to 8 years and one month in prison on Tuesday for orchestrating a scheme to steal more than $19 million from Medicaid and using the money to buy multiple houses, a Ferrari and other luxury cars. Adnan “Eddie” Arshad, 47, was also ordered by U.S. District Judge Joan M. Azrack to pay restitution of $19.7 million and forfeiture of $19.7 million, which includes homes and vehicles that he purchased with the Medicaid funds.

Long Island gasoline prices top $4 per gallon as Iran War disrupts oil production, transportation

Gasoline prices on Long Island topped $4 per gallon on Monday for the second day in a row as the war with Iran disrupted oil production and transportation. The average price of regular unleaded was $4.03 per gallon, up from Sunday’s $4.025. A year ago, the price was $3.09 on average — a 94-cent difference, according to AAA.
