Ask the Registrar: Inside the 2025 Town Election
Q1: There seemed to be more interest in the Stratford mayor’s race this year than I remember. Did more people vote than in past mayoral elections? A: Most Stratford mayoral races have turnout around the 33 percent mark. Statewide in Connecticut, turnout was 37 percent on Nov. 4. But in Stratford, it was 40.5 percent, far exceeding our expectations (and leading to some nervous moments when we wondered if we had enough ballots printed. We did : ) Q2: When is David Chess sworn-in as Mayor?

Ask the Registrar-Stratford
Q1: I like the new Early Voting system, but I hate being forced to put my ballot into an envelope, seal it, and write my name on the outer envelope. Why do you make us do that? A: Because the Legislature mandates it. Registrars have repeatedly lobbied the Legislature to change the requirement and, instead, have voters simply submit their ballot to the tabular that reads it and drops it into the black storage box.
Book Review: Joyland by Stephen King
A Young Adult Romance Sprinkled with Murder Over the last few years, I’ve become more of a Stephen King fan. As a child, I was terrified of his movies, so naturally I avoided his books like the plague. It wasn’t until 11/22/63, an alternate history book about preventing the assassination of JFK, that I decided to explore his selection of less horrifying books. I picked up Firestarter last year and enjoyed it greatly, though I’ll probably be skipping the movie adaptations.

Everyone Needs An Editor
I've been so used to editing student papers and leaving constructive feedback that I forgot what it feels like to be edited. There is nothing more humbling than to have someone read your work and point out your faults. Being a writing professor is one of the joys of my life but it doesn't mean I'm impervious to bad writing habits. I've learned a lot about myself and know where I need to improve because I have an editor who values quality.
Stratford -- gerrymander capital of Connecticut
Skip to content On June 12, The Stratford Town Council votes on the town’s redistricting plan. The process used to produce the plan was tainted by gerrymandering from the very start. It shows the danger of one party rule, in Stratford and elsewhere. 1. First, the plan was rammed through the Redistricting Commission without the kind of careful discussion and consideration of alternate plans that Stratford residents expect.
District boundaries benefit Republicans, the Democratic registrar says Original
Stratford Town Hall, in Stratford. Ned Gerard/Hearst Connecticut Media For three straight U.S. Census cycles, Stratford Republicans have used gerrymandering to redraw political boundaries and help their party in town elections. The result: Democrats almost always carry the town in elections for president, and governor, U.S. Senate and the U.S. House. But when it comes to the Town Council with its rigged district lines, the GOP has had a majority on the Town Council for 22 of the past 24 years.

10 Word Story Challenge

Scott Fitzgerald I was challenged by Mark Cosby after reading his 10-word stories and leaving a response. I didn't sit down and write them all at once. Johnny Depp Can't Stop Laughing At Amber Heard's Lawyers
What should be a tumultuous time for Johnny Depp and Amber Heard as they go through this trial is actually filled with a lot of laughter, most of it thanks to Amber Heard’s lawyers. Yes, the trial of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard has captivated audiences far and wide, especially on social media. It seems like everyday there’s a new piece of information about the trial. And, if I’m going to be honest, most of what I have seen has been unintentionally hilarious.

Bruins Come Out Flat, Fall to Leafs 3-2 & Trail Series 2 Games to 1

Cotillo: Red Sox JD Martinez "Could Sign Elsewhere" Next Season
The Red Sox have have been all about extensions this offseason. Chris Sale, Xander Bogaerts are locked up long term. The Sox are all ears should Mookie Betts ever want to chat. JD Martinez? Not so much. The Sox of course signed Martinez to a 5 year deal prior to the 2018 season but there is a mutual opt out after the 2019 season. Mass Live’s Chris Cotillo who is the new host of the Red Sox Beat podcast on CLNS Media says Red Sox fans have real cause for concern.
Chris Sale Rocked in Dismal Opening Day Start For Red Sox in Seattle
SHARE Remember the Chris Sale that we saw at the end of last season and into the playoffs? The mortal version of Sale, the one with reduced velocity. Yeah, he’s still here. Chris Sale lasted only 3 innings in his opening day start against the Mariners giving up 7 runs on 6 hits. Sale allowed 3 home runs on the night. That’s something that did not happen once last season. Velocity a big issue for Sale. His first fastball of the night came in at 90 miles per hour.

Will Healthcare Law Pit Obama vs. Roberts?
President Franklin D. Roosevelt reacted with fury when major legislative pillars of his New Deal were declared unconstitutional by a Supreme Court anchored by four ideological conservatives. He lashed out at the justices, accusing them of practicing crass politics disguised as constitutional law. Seventy-five years ago last month, FDR proposed his ill-fated court-packing plan that would have allowed him to stack the court with new appointees sympathetic to the New Deal.

Eisenhower vs. Warren: The Battle for Civil Rights and Liberties
We are living in tumultuous political times. Regardless of one’s partisan views, there can be no debate that after the 2016 election, governmental norms as understood by most of the democratic world have been turned on their head. The list is endless, from constant alarms of “breaking news” to Twitter storms from the left and right. As Bob Dylan announced in 1964, “The Times They Are a Changin’.”I make this observation in discussing EISENHOWER VS. WARREN for a simple purpose.
Syria: Chemical Attacks and U.S. Response
On April 7th, the Syrians again used chemical weapons against their people, with dozens killed, potentially 70 or more. Many were innocent children, yet again. Israel has put down a marker, by striking first at a Syrian airfield, now the United States must act. In the past, both the Obama administration and Trump administration have stated this is unacceptable.

Eisenhower vs. Warren
The epic 1950s battle that would shape the legal future of the civil rights movement is chronicled here for the first time. The bitter feud between President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Chief Justice Earl Warren framed the tumultuous future of the modern civil rights movement. Eisenhower was a gradualist who wanted to coax white Americans in the South into eventually accepting integration, while Warren, author of the Supreme Court’s historic unanimous opinion in Brown v.
Walking a tightrope: political activity and lobbying for charitable organizations
Since the passage of the 1954 "Johnson Amendment" to the Internal Revenue Code, charitable organizations cannot "participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distributing of statements), any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office." This applies to political campaigns at the federal, state and local levels, from federal presidential and congressional elections to local school board elections.
A Comprehensive Database and Analysis Framework To Incorporate Multiscale Data Types and Enable Integrated Analysis of Bioactive Polyphenols
The development of a given botanical preparation for eventual clinical application requires extensive, detailed characterizations of the chemical composition, as well as the biological availability, biological activity, and safety profiles of the botanical. Letters: Hypoactive desire disorder a 'true' condition
I read your article on UrologyTimes.com, “Testosterone therapy in women: Is there a benefit?” that discusses a meta-analysis finding flibanserin (Addyi) to have similar results as placebo, and suggests “conservative options” for treatment of hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD), such as couples counseling and pelvic floor physical therapy.
Triumph of technology
Overwhelmed by tweets posted every minute of the Presidential campaign? Confused by cable TV hosts conjuring new, often contradictory, poll results? You’re not alone. Whether you are a voter, campaign strategist, college student, or professor, the old lessons of political campaigns haven’t been very useful in this new era of politics and the media. Call it a Triumph of Technology, where there’s more information bombarding you than ever before.
