There’s something highly problematic with rating wine producers, rather than rating wines. But this is how Michelin have chosen to approach the wine space, in their attempt to grow their restaurant brand into other spheres of gastronomy and hospitality. If you are a wine producer, and you send me a wine, and I describe it to my audience and add a score, then if I love it, great, and if I don’t, no big deal. The terms of the encounter are clear. I tasted and rated the wine that was in front of me.

I’ve recently been exploring speciality coffee, and took a trip to Brazil to see the coffee harvest, and observe how the cherries are processed. I also did a cupping session, where professionals evaluate different coffees. They score, too: anything scoring over 80 is considered speciality coffee. But one thing I’ve noticed is that in communicating the character of coffee to consumers, it’s very normal just to use three descriptors. That’s it. I quite like this sawn-off shotgun of a tasting note.

Here's an alcohol and health study we should be shouting about

My friend and colleague Felix Åhrberg tipped me off about this scientific paper. It’s titled Running from Death: Can Fitness Outpace Alcohol’s Harm? Changes in Alcohol Intake, Fitness and All-Cause Mortality in the HUNT Study, Norway. The reference is here. The conclusions are incredibly reassuring for the fitter among us, but not so much for the fatties. You can read the paper for yourself, but I’ll just headline the key findings.
