1 Introduction Since the late Quaternary, terrestrial and marine faunas have experienced extinction rates well above the background, being some 100–1000× higher during the Anthropocene (de Vos et al. 2015; Dirzo et al. 2014; McCauley et al. 2015). Human-driven environmental changes have also caused the local extirpation of many more species (Szabo et al. 2012); however, the full extent of range contractions can be difficult to resolve due to a lack of long-term ecological records (Lupone et al. 2024).

Usually, truffles and truffle-like fungi (which don't belong to the truffle genus, but are otherwise similar) are dull-colored and grow underground. They use scent to attract mammals, which eat them and disperse the spores across the landscape in their dung. This ancient truffle-mammal relationship is why truffle pigs and truffle dogs (and many humans) love eating these fungi.
