While other area events were delayed and cancelled due to the weather, neighbors showed up, flags went up, and an all-day celebration stretched from a morning pancake breakfast to a fireworks display over the Missouri River. The celebration carried extra weight this year, as the holiday marks America’s 250th birthday.

MERRIAM, Kan. (KCTV) - A Merriam school that helped end segregation in America earned a major national honor this week. The National Park Service added the Madam C.J. Walker School to the National Register of Historic Places, unlocking new restoration funding supporters desperately need. Federal DEI cuts already wiped out funding they were counting on, pushing back their four-million-dollar restoration plan and a World Cup deadline.
