What’s lost when reporters leave China?
How do you tell China’s story when journalism in China is so limited? What is lost when so few reporters remain? Ryan Hass and Jon Czin sit down with former China correspondent Jane Perlez to discuss her favorite beats and stories, the difficulties of reporting in China, how Beijing steers foreign coverage toward “shiny bauble” stories, and the importance of people-to-people exchange between the U.S. and China. Listen to The Beijing Brief on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you like to get podcasts.
In Trump-Xi Face-Off, a Clash of Personalities
The crowd in the formal dining room atop the State Department was exuberant: China’s incoming president, Xi Jinping, the guest of honor, stood on the podium, champagne glass in hand. The businessmen, diplomats, and China handlers mingled, wreathed in smiles. Not because it was Valentine’s Day. The Americans saw the son of a reformist Chinese leader, a cautious, pragmatic, technocrat who had built his career in coastal provinces that embraced markets and global trade.

A Look Inside China's Army of Citizen Spies
On my first visit to China as a member of an Australian student group decades ago, we were assigned several guides from the National Travel Service. One of them was suave in an understated way, helpful but not too much so. A few of us latched onto him, and we all became quite friendly as we toured communes, universities, and museums. Let’s call him Mr. Wong. Many years later, when I returned to Beijing as a journalist I decided to look him up. What was he like now I wondered?

When America and China Collided
On a sunny Sunday morning in April 2001, an American EP-3E Aries II surveillance aircraft was flying at 22,500 feet over international waters in the South China Sea when two Chinese F-8 fighter jets appeared. One of the F-8s, piloted by a lieutenant commander named Wang Wei, flew within ten feet of the spy plane’s left wing and saluted the crew before dropping back 100 feet. Wang then approached a second time, flying within five feet and seeming to shout something at the American pilots.

Biden y Xi han conversado solo cinco veces por teléfono desde principios de 2021. Según opinión de diplomáticos y analistas, ese escaso contacto hace que las fricciones sean más peligrosas. Chinese Drones: The Latest Irritant Buzzing Taiwan’s Defenses
TAIPEI, Taiwan — At first the Taiwanese soldiers ignored the drones flying from China. Then, as the flights increased, they fired warning shots. Finally, the soldiers shot one into the sea. China sends ships and planes toward Taiwan, despite rising criticism
China sent more warships and aircraft into waters and airspace near Taiwan today, defying international criticism of its military exercises and demonstrating the country’s confidence, as well as its growing appetite for confrontation. In addition to its muscle flexing, China also threw several diplomatic punches aimed at laying out the global cost of what it considers brazen challenges to its claims of sovereignty over Taiwan, a democratically ruled island.
Allies respond with caution and criticism to Pelosi visit.
America’s allies in Asia reacted to Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan with a mixture of caution and criticism. In Australia, the foreign minister, Penny Wong, urged “all parties” to de-escalate tensions. She appeared to signal that both China and the United States should try to calm things down after Ms. Pelosi’s splashy visit to Taiwan. Implicit in her statement was that the real show — a demonstration of China’s military muscle — could start after the speaker’s departure.
