'Woman is a dirty word': The trans culture of fear plaguing the NHS
When Charlotte* discovered that a male colleague was using the women's changing room at work, she raised the matter with her manager at the NHS . The colleague identified as a woman and had begun using a female name, but female staff had not been consulted about the effect on their changing arrangements. “The matron spoke to HR and asked: ‘Where should this person change? They're identifying as a woman.' And HR said: ‘Well, they change wherever they want.

Become a spiked supporter. ‘Please, please, please listen to James O’Brien today.’ The email came from a woman listening to LBC’s coverage of the new Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) code on single-sex spaces, which came into force in the UK. She had no journalism training, but she instinctively understood what was missing from O’Brien’s programme.
Why did the BBC downplay the horror of Afghan men selling their daughters?
Share Topics Feminism World Want unlimited, ad-free access? Become a spiked supporter. There’s a phrase used a lot in journalism called the ‘top line’. When you’re pitching a story to an editor and it’s not quite landing, they’ll ask: ‘Yeah, but what’s the top line?’ What is this story really about? What’s the thing readers absolutely need to understand first? Often, that becomes the headline.
Trans insanity lives on, despite the Supreme Court ruling
One year on from that momentous judgement, women’s spaces remain unprotected. Share Topics Feminism Politics UK Want unlimited, ad-free access? Become a spiked supporter. I was in the courtroom when the UK Supreme Court judgment on gender was handed down a year ago today. It felt like witnessing a pivotal moment in history.
‘Her penis’? Journalists have given up on telling the truth
Share Topics Identity Politics Politics UK Want unlimited, ad-free access? Become a spiked supporter. What would you think if you were told that a six-year-old boy had tried to cut off his penis because he could no longer join Girlguiding? Would you blame the new admissions policy – which no longer allows boys to join, even if they identify as girls – or would you think this was a child in serious distress? This is not a hypothetical question.
Girl Guides facing legal action for delaying trans ban
Girlguiding is facing a legal challenge for letting trans members temporarily remain in the organisation, despite a ban. Lawyers have been instructed by the mother of a guide to prepare a pre-action letter arguing that the terms of the ban present a safeguarding issue, The Telegraph has learnt. The youth charity announced in December that it would not allow biological boys or men who identify as trans girls or women to join.
The Olympics have finally recognised biological reality
The IOC’s ban on ‘transwomen’ in women’s sport is long overdue. Share Topics Feminism Sport Want unlimited, ad-free access? Become a spiked supporter. I was ‘first lady’ at my local Parkrun once. Just once – and I’d been chasing it for months. I’m no elite athlete. I was in my forties at the time, and had been the sort of child who was always picked last in PE. It may have been a free, 5km run in a local park, but coming first felt like winning Olympic gold.
Girl Guides at war over trans ban
The trans ban has caused infighting within the Girlguiding organisation - Denise Baker/Getty Images The Girl Guides have become embroiled in infighting over a ban on boys who identify as girls. A splinter group has formed in a bid to force the organisation to reverse the trans ban, introduced last year following a Supreme Court ruling on the meaning of sex under equality law.
Awards ceremonies are erasing women
Biological males should not receive awards intended for women A man who once played the piano with his penis on TV has been nominated for a prestigious television award. If you think that sounds like a low point for the creative arts, that’s not even the worst part. Because this man claims he is a transgender woman, and has been nominated in the Female Comedy Performance category of the Royal Television Society Awards.
No, Paloma Faith, a baby cannot ‘choose’ its sex Original
Want unlimited, ad-free access? Become a spiked supporter. British singer Paloma Faith has said she’ll let her third baby decide whether it’s a boy or a girl. In an Instagram video earlier this month, she prances around, cradling her bump, insisting it’s 2026 and her child will decide his or her or ‘their’ gender when they’re old enough. Anyone who disagrees is, apparently, a ‘transphobic, homophobic prick’. ‘It’s 2026 – do we even give a shit about gender anymore?’, Faith says.
Courageous Women Of The Week: Sall Grover, Jenny Lindsay and Sharron Davies - 8 November 2024
One of the things that frightens me most about the ongoing erosion of women’s sex based rights, is how little your ‘average’ woman knows about it. While the odd news story might catch their attention and/or make them roll their eyes. Or out and out make them mad (like the legal battle launched by the Darlington NHS nurses to get a man out of their changing room) … when I talk to women outside the Twitter/Substack ‘bubble’ I’m often surprised how much they aren’t aware of.
What does it mean to be a courageous woman in 2024?

How can we get more hairdressers involved in women’s rights campaigning?
I’ve long thought hairdressers were missing a trick - and an additional stream of income. Because - as journalist Jill Foster - pointed out on X this morning, they always call it right when it comes to politics (including the result of the US election). Thanks for reading Janet’s Substack! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. Which makes perfect sense. Because hair stylists speak to a cross-section of the population every single day - month in, month out.
