Shane van Gisbergen wins the pole for Cup Series race in downtown Chicago
CHICAGO — When it comes to NASCAR's street course in downtown Chicago, there is Shane van Gisbergen, and then there is everyone else. Van Gisbergen won the pole for Sunday's Grant Park 165. The 36-year-old New Zealander turned a lap at 88.338 mph on a tricky 2.2-mile course that was made more treacherous by temperatures in the 90s Fahrenheit on Saturday. "Practice wasn't that great for us, but when we went out for qualifying, the car felt really good," van Gisbergen said.
Sports play through another dangerously hot day in parts of the US
CHICAGO — The shade — under the roof and the upper deck, in every dugout and tunnel — was a popular place at Wrigley Field on Sunday. The sunny seats, not so much. Several major league teams played through a second straight day of muggy conditions as dangerously hot temperatures dominated parts of the United States during a rare June heat wave. The PGA Tour was in a sweltering Connecticut for the Travelers Championship, and the LPGA played the KPMG Women's PGA Championship in the heat of Texas.

More players finding way from field to GM office

After a particularly nasty strikeout by Eric Gagne, Dipoto laughed. Fregosi promptly slapped Dipoto on the back of his head. "He said, 'I'm just going to remind you today. ... Don't ever forget how hard that it is to play,'" Dipoto recalled.

NASCAR: Bowman outlasts Reddick in weather impacted street race
JAY COHEN Associated Press CHICAGO — At long last, Alex Bowman got a win. And a spot in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. So yeah, he was ready to party. “We’re going to drink so much damn bourbon tonight, it’s going to be a bad deal,” a jubilant Bowman said. “I’m probably going to wake up naked on the bathroom floor again. That’s just part of this deal sometimes.” Bowman held off Tyler Reddick on a rainy street course in downtown Chicago on Sunday, stopping an 80-race winless drought.
Chicago street course offers a tricky opportunity for winless NASCAR Cup Series drivers
CHICAGO — Alex Bowman sees a Chicago street course full of possibilities. He also sees a major potential problem. "All the winners behind us in points make my life harder for sure," Bowman said Saturday. "So just trying to do the best we can to get in victory lane to avoid those issues." That's the situation for a group of NASCAR Cup Series contenders fighting for five remaining spots in the playoffs after Joey Logano became this season's 11th different winner last weekend in Tennessee.

MLB teams welcome LGBTQ+ fans with Pride Nights but not one has seen an active player come out
CHICAGO (AP) — When it comes to baseball and LGBTQ+ inclusivity, Billy Bean often flashes back to his playing days. Ending his career without telling his parents about his life as a closeted gay ballplayer. Shielding his secret from teammates like Brad Ausmus and Torey Lovullo. The regret of not sharing his “full self,” he says. It's a message Bean has delivered in clubhouses, and it resonates with today's ballplayers — hyper-focused on staying in the majors, and being a good teammate.
