Fathers are still an afterthought in most parental leave policies. That wasn’t the case with my employer, and it changed my parenting experience. In 2024, my employer Browne Jacobson increased its paternity, co-parent and co-adopter leave to 13 weeks full pay and a further 13 weeks half pay. Having lived through that policy first-hand, and seen the conversation unfold across the business, I wanted to share my personal experience.

Cornell University is increasing its annual voluntary contribution to the Ithaca City School District (ICSD), raising the payment from $650,000 to $700,000 and moving up the timing of a planned increase in the multi-year schedule the university and the school district have been following. During Radon Awareness Week, January 26–30, 2026, Tompkins County Whole Health (TCWH) is urging residents to test their homes for radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can significantly increase the risk of lung cancer. Radon is odorless, colorless, and tasteless, making it impossible to detect without a test. The gas forms in the ground and can seep into homes through cracks and gaps in foundations, floors, and walls. Once inside, radon can accumulate to dangerous levels over time.

Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit says bus service has been suspended for the rest of the day Sunday, and TCAT ‘s operations team will monitor road conditions early Monday to determine when it will be safe to resume service. Tompkins County Sheriff Derek Osborne “has advised residents to avoid any unnecessary travel due to dangerous road conditions from the prolonged winter storm,” according to an alert just before 2pm Sunday.

Cornell University announced Saturday evening that the Ithaca and AgriTech campuses will close at noon Sunday due to the impending weather. Classes before noon Monday are canceled. The University may reopen at noon Monday, depending on conditions. The university says residence halls remain open, and information about dining and other services will be available at scl.cornell.edu. Staff working in essential roles should report to work per department instructions.

Ithaca College has announced that it “will be open but in remote operating status from noon on Sunday, Jan. 25 until 11pm on Monday, Jan. 26” due to the impending winter storm. Numerous closures have been announced as Ithaca and Tompkins County prepare for significant storm impacts. “No in-person classes,” said Ithaca College in Saturday’s alert. “Essential staff should report in person. Campus services will be limited.” They refer IC students and staff to an e-mail for additional details.

“After a lot of reflection,” said Chef Kuukua Yomekpe this week, “Asempe Kitchen in Ithaca will be closing its current restaurant operations.” The brick and mortar location in Downtown Ithaca opened in July 2024 after Chef Kuukua and her team served their delicious West African food at pop-ups and farmers market stalls for a couple of years. “Our last day of service will be Sunday, February 1, 2026,” says Chef Kuukua.

The City of Ithaca announced changes in the fall of 2019 to its odd-even parking regulations, which apply from November 1st to April 1st, and officials have put them into effect Friday, January 23rd, until further notice, due to the anticipated snow over the next couple of days. The parking rules apply from 7pm to 6am. “In anticipation of winter weather, Odd/ Even parking is in effect until further notice,” officials said in a statement.

Flu case counts fell again from last week, and COVID case counts are falling, though still higher locally than statewide. The Tompkins County flu graph shows influenza infections are definitely ahead of last year’s flu season, but dropped again this week: Flu cases compared to last year.
