Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I started as a high school sports writer.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. Technology in my career spans from a manual typewriter to the latest digital devices. One of my first laptops weighed several pounds.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Journalists are the public's representative. Journalism is not about you, but you are there to present factual information to news consumers.

Why did you become a journalist?

I got hooked the first time I was on deadline and dictated a story back to the office. More importantly, journalism could make a difference.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I worked for my high school newspaper, serving in several roles.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Work hard, always know there's more to the story, and do your best to tell the complete story.
