Jim Boren retired in 2018 as Executive Editor/Senior Vice President of The Fresno Bee. He is now Executive Director of the Fresno State Institute for Media and Public Trust. In that role, he develops programs to promote media literacy, identifies strategies to fight fake news and is working to bridge the trust gap between media outlets and news consumers.

He also teaches journalism at Fresno State, and continues to do freelance writing, reporting and editing for various publications.

What was your first job as a journalist?

I started as a high school sports writer.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. Technology in my career spans from a manual typewriter to the latest digital devices. One of my first laptops weighed several pounds.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Journalists are the public's representative. Journalism is not about you, but you are there to present factual information to news consumers.
