Julie Carr Smyth is an award-winning journalist covering government and politics from Columbus for The Associated Press. She was part of the reporting team honored as a finalist for the 2025 Pulitzer Prize in Breaking News for its coverage of the attempted assassination of Donald Trump. The effort also won a National Press Club Award. Smyth holds bachelor's and master's degrees in journalism from The Ohio State University, where she was a Kiplinger Fellow.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Gov. Mike DeWine on Tuesday used his bully pulpit to call for an end to the death penalty in Ohio. The 79-year-old Republican cited his expertise on the issue as a former county prosecutor, member of both chambers of Congress and Ohio attorney general, as well as his seven years as governor. But DeWine’s support for a policy change is far from assured to make waves, even in a state controlled by his own party.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost announced Thursday that a grand jury has reindicted two fired FirstEnergy Corp. executives whose initial prosecutions in the state’s long-running $60 million bribery scandal ended in mistrial earlier this year. Yost, a Republican, joined Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich in detailing a combined 22 new criminal counts against Charles “Chuck” Jones, the Akron-based energy giant’s former CEO, and Michael Dowling, its one-time top lobbyist.

I started as the City Hall Reporter for the Galion (Ohio) Enquirer the week after leaving college. We wrote, edited and laid out the paper.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Had a whole collection of them when I was younger, from an antique Blickensderfer to a workhorse Remington to the dreamy IBM Selectric.

How is social media changing news?

Forces journalism to be more conversational and comprehensible, which is good. Adds rumor-busting time to our to-do lists, which can be bad.
