What was your first job as a journalist?
I usually say writing green business and start-up technology stories for Long Island Business News, but really my first job as a journalist was writing obituaries for a mom-and-pop small community newspaper group.
How is social media changing news?
Misinformation abound. We've never been so much closer to being so much further apart.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Giving people the knowledge they need to make their own informed decisions in their lives. Some times that requires a watchdog; sometimes a guide dog.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
The Wildcat's "Paw Print" featured a few stories from a writer before adopting the byline "J.D."
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Talk to real people, not politicians speaking from podiums, to understand what motivates them to feel and act the way they do. You'll notice their distance from the pundits.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I am sucker for National Geographic photography, and any hometown paper in nowhere's special America.
