J.D. Allen is a lecturer at the School of Communication and Journalism, with a joint appointment in Stony Brook's Office of Marketing and Communications to help develop climate and science stories, as well as find opportunities for and coordinate with students.

What was your first job as a journalist?

I usually say writing green business and start-up technology stories for Long Island Business News, but really my first job as a journalist was writing obituaries for a mom-and-pop small community newspaper group.

How is social media changing news?

Misinformation abound. We've never been so much closer to being so much further apart.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Giving people the knowledge they need to make their own informed decisions in their lives. Some times that requires a watchdog; sometimes a guide dog.
