Who could be next to commit?
(Photo: Blair Angulo, 247Sports) Jeremiah Williams announced his BYU commitment this week. The big defensive tackle (who also plays running back for his high school team - a note that we can't NOT mention every opportunity that we get) chose BYU over a myriad of P4 offers. He is locked in with the Cougars, and has joined Tytan Dejong and Ezra Sanelivi as the players committed to BYU in the Class of 2027.
BYU fights back and beats Arizona in double overtime to remain undefeated
A little more than a decade ago, I bought a new offset smoker. I had never smoked any meats before, but I figured it couldn't be too difficult to put a giant chunk of pork in a smoker and let it sit there until it was delicious. This was before the pellet-smoker craze, so I used some apple wood from a neighbor's tree that had been chopped down. Thinking it would be easy to make this offset contraption work, I just threw everything onto the grill and started a fire. Easy peasy, right? Well, no.
BYU's biggest questions heading into Training Camp
What are the biggest questions BYU has to answer when Training Camp gets underway next week? Week 1 is still two weeks away, but BYU's Training Camp will wrap up in the next couple of days. The Cougars are nearing the portion of August where they shift away from training camp and shift into game prep. Position battles are a lot more solidified. The depth chart has mostly taken shape.
ORC2 regulation of human gene expression shows unexpected breadth and scale
Origin-recognition complex (ORC) plays an unexpectedly broad role in the regulation of human cell gene expression, according to a study in the journal Cell Reports. "This is the first detailed study of how and where ORC regulates epigenetics and gene expression in human cells," said Anindya Dutta, Ph.D., leader of the study and chair of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Genetics.
Recommendations for mitochondria transfer and transplantation research
Most animal, plant and fungal cells contain organelles called mitochondria. These descendants of a primordial bacterial endosymbiont still preserve distinct genes and are known for their ability to create ATP as chemical energy. They also have other important functions, including cell signaling, viral and bacterial sensing, cell division, cell death, and innate and adaptive immune responses. Consequently, impairment in mitochondrial function can result in aging and age-related diseases.
Simplified redesign of proteins to improve ligand binding
In biology, the binding of cellular proteins to molecules called ligands produces a myriad of functions essential for life, including cell signaling and enzymatic action. In biotechnology and medicine, the ability of researchers to alter proteins to refine control over binding affinity and specificity can create tailored therapeutics with reduced side effects, highly sensitive diagnostic tools, efficient biocatalysis, targeted drug delivery systems and sustainable bioremediation solutions.

A 36-gene predictive score of anti-cancer drug resistance anticipates cancer therapy outcomes
In 1937, President Franklin Roosevelt signed the National Cancer Act, launching a nationwide effort to combat the disease. Eighty-seven years later, despite significant progress, cancer treatment often falls short, with 50% to 80% of patients not responding to treatment and more than 600,000 cancer deaths annually in the United States. What if clinicians could predict the success of any cancer treatment, ensuring each patient receives the most effective care?
Human proteins identified that explain inter-individual differences in functional brain connectivity
A long-standing goal of neuroscience is to understand how molecules and cellular structures on a microscale give rise to communication between brain regions at the macroscale. A study published in Nature Neuroscience now identifies, for the first time, hundreds of brain proteins that explain inter-individual differences in functional connectivity and structural covariation in the human brain.
Structural biology analysis of a Pseudomonas bacterial virus reveals a genome ejection motor
The viruses that infect bacteria are the most abundant biological entities on the planet. For example, a recent simple study of 92 showerheads and 36 toothbrushes from American bathrooms found more than 600 types of bacterial viruses, commonly called bacteriophages or phages. A teaspoon of coastal seawater has about 50 million phages. While largely unnoticed, phages do not harm humans.
Memory loss in aging and dementia: Dendritic spine head diameter predicts memory in old age
Over the course of life, memory fades with varying degrees, robbing older people of the ability to recollect personal experiences. This progressive, nearly inevitable process has long been hypothesized as a consequence of nature's removal of dendritic spines, a key component of synapses, from brain neurons as they age.
Tiny deletion in heart muscle protein briefly affects embryonic ventricles but has long-term effects on adult atrial fibrilla
Millions of adults have atrial fibrillation — an irregular beating of the upper chambers of the heart that yields increased risk of heart failure, stroke and death. Many genetic mutations in the developing fetus can lead to adult atrial fibrillation, including mutations that shorten the massive protein titin in cardiac muscle cells.
Deep machine-learning speeds assessment of fruit fly heart aging and disease, a model for human disease
Drosophila—commonly known as fruit flies—are a valuable model for human heart pathophysiology, including cardiac aging and cardiomyopathy. However, a choke point in evaluating fruit fly hearts is the need for human intervention to measure the heart at moments of its largest expansion or its greatest contraction, measurements that allow calculations of cardiac dynamics.
Encouraging Phase 1 data for glioblastoma treatment reported by UAB researchers at ASCO
Preliminary clinical data for glioblastoma multiforme patients enrolled in a Phase 1 clinical trial at the University of Alabama at Birmingham demonstrated that 92 percent of evaluable patients treated with INB-200 exceeded a median progression-free survival of seven months with concomitant temozolomide chemotherapy. The median follow-up was 11.7 months.
Second Phase 3 clinical trial again shows dupilumab lessens disease in COPD patients with type 2 inflammation
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients with type 2 inflammation may soon gain access to a new drug—dupilumab—that showed rapid and sustained improvements in patients in a pivotal Phase 3 clinical trial, researchers report in the New England Journal of Medicine. This monoclonal antibody is the first biologic shown to improve clinical outcomes in COPD. The data supporting the use of dupilumab in COPD will be reviewed by the United States Food and Drug Administration in June.
New study shows association of historical housing discrimination and shortfalls in colon cancer treatment
A nationwide study of 196 cities shows that housing discrimination from 90 years ago still casts a historical shadow of inequities in colon cancer care today, S.M. Qasim Hussaini, M.D., of the University of Alabama at Birmingham and colleagues at the American Cancer Society and Johns Hopkins School of Public Health report in the journal JCO Oncology Practice.
ALG6 acts as a modifier gene in the inherited genetic eye disease retinitis pigmentosa 59
Modifier genes add complexity to precision medicine. A modifier gene is one that has genetic variants such as single nucleotide changes that differ from the most common sequence in the population. These variants do not cause disease by themselves, but can lessen or exacerbate a different genetic disease phenotype by unknown mechanisms. Steven Pittler, Ph.D., at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, has sought to find modifier genes for the hereditary eye disorder retinitis pigmentosa type 59.
A sense of touch: ASICs are the receptor for a proton synaptic messenger between Merkel cells and an afferent nerve
Transduction is the changing of one form of energy into another, such as a spoken voice changed into radio waves by a cellphone. Ten years ago, three research teams published a breakthrough—the first description of the molecular mechanism for transduction in fingertip sensory Merkel cells that can transduce gentle touch, a mechanical force, into an electric current.
Interferon-gamma drives brain pathology in a mouse model of multiple system atrophy
Multiple system atrophy is a rare and fatal neurodegenerative disease, where insoluble inclusions of the protein alpha-synuclein appear in oligodendrocyte cells of the brain. The resulting pathogenesis features neuroinflammation, demyelination and neurodegeneration. Oligodendrocytes produce myelin, an insulating sheath on the axons of nerves.

Who Is Ranked Today That Won't Be In December
The AP Poll is out in all of its glory. BYU was not ranked in the top 25. That is probably reasonable given how much production BYU loses this year. You can’t expect every AP voter to feel comfortable with an unknown Jacob Conover or a Jaren Hall who has yet to complete a game in which he starts. So, BYU’s unranked status is perfectly reasonable. This is not about BYU’s ranking, however. This is about the accuracy of the preseason.
