“Shall the Minnesota Constitution be amended to state that artificial intelligence does not have the right to free speech?” In November, Minnesota voters may be asked to answer this profound, and profoundly strange, question. Voters are often asked to take time out of their busy lives to decide deep questions, but rarely one this deep. We are a lawyer and two philosophers who study AI “speech.” AI safety is an urgent problem, but this ban would be unnecessary and could be counterproductive. Why?
