The Yale Review | Jen Silverman: “Antarctica”
Jen Silverman Photo by Cherry Laithang on Unsplash “One summer, many decades ago”—the poet said—“I had an affair with two scientists, a father and son, at an Antarctic science station. Across six months of polar darkness, I fell first for the father, then for the son.” We were at dinner—an artists’ colony in the Northeast, sitting at a long farmhouse table. All around us voices buzzed, but my eyes were fixed on the poet.

‘Good’ Girlhood: 7 female-focused coming-of-age films
When I pitched my column “‘Good’ Girlhood,” Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” (2023) was the number one film at the box office. I wanted to capitalize on the appetite for coming-of-age films about women and spotlight movies that I think Daily readers would be interested in watching. About three weeks into its theatrical run, “Barbie” had grossed a billion dollars, making Gerwig the only woman with a solo directing credit to achieve this .
In the Next World, Maybe
She got off the train at Hudson and her father was there, tall and resigned, his long hands unraveling the brim of his sun hat as he held it in front of him. She had wondered if she would recognize him right away, but of course she did. The lines in his face had become grooves, and he was baked by the sun, lankier and more muscular than she remembered. She had been ten when she last saw him.

Faction of Fools mounts spectacularly original 'The Moors' by Jen Silverman
“Playwrights … want to hide ourselves, and we want to expose ourselves at the same time,” Jen Silverman said in an interview with American Theatre. In their dark comedy The Moors — just opened at Faction of Fools — “the characters make inexorable mistakes because they are so close to finally breaking out of their loneliness, they take one final step and go over the edge of the cliff.” Faction of Fools practices the Renaissance-era form of commedia dell’arte.

Art isn't supposed to make you comfortable
When I was in college, I came across "The Sea and Poison," a 1950s novel by Shusaku Endo. It tells the story of a doctor in postwar Japan who, as an intern years earlier, participated in a vivisection experiment on an American prisoner. Endo's lens on the story is not the easiest one, ethically speaking; he doesn't dwell on the suffering of the victim. Instead, he chooses to explore a more unsettling element: the humanity of the perpetrators.

Book Review: ‘There’s Going to Be Trouble,’ by Jen Silverman
THERE’S GOING TO BE TROUBLE, by Jen Silverman I recently gave birth, and there are moments when I look at my son and feel the heavy knowledge that he will carry the burden of my mistakes. In other moments there’s lightness, for motherhood, in just a few months, has taught me that my influence is limited, despite my best attempts and biggest failures.

Previous contributors include Jesmyn Ward, Lauren Groff, Bret Easton Ellis, Celeste Ng, T.C. Boyle, Dana Spiotta, Amy Bloom, Aimee Bender, Roxane Gay, and many others. Jen Silverman’sThere’s Going to Be Trouble is the rare novel that is as exciting as it is thought-provoking.

Apr. 2024. 320p. Random, $29 (9780593448359); e-book (9780593448366 ). REVIEW. First published March 15, 2024 (Booklist). Tilting in time between the student antiwar protests in the U.S. during the late 1960s and contemporary anti-administration demonstrations on the streets of Paris, Silverman’s examination of the nature of rebellion, the influence of family, and one’s pursuit of individuality coalesces around the stories of Minnow and Keen.
THERE'S GOING TO BE TROUBLE
A flawed but vibrant and juicy book, good conversation fodder for the politically inclined. On the Harvard campus in 1969 and the Paris streets in 2018, parallel protagonists become enmeshed in radical politics and romance. Playwright Silverman’s sophomore novel starts off strong, pursuing two storylines that will of course eventually converge.

Off Camera | By John Paul Scotto | Issue 574 | The Sun Magazine
When I was a senior in high school, I became obsessed with the home movies Dad kept in his armoire, behind bottles of cologne. Every day I’d reach through a cloud of Brut and vanilla musk, remove a tape from the stack, and watch the footage alone in our basement, captivated by images of the kid I used to be. There I was at the age of eight, playing baseball in the backyard. Dad was recording me through the kitchen window, so I thought I was alone.

Years ago, when I worked in the claims department of an insurance company, my supervisor called me into his office to discuss what he referred to as my “marked decrease in productivity.” He provided me with an official-looking document that ranked all the workers in terms of their contributions to the company. My name was at the bottom. “I thought you were supposed to be smart,” he said.
