Washington Mystics guard Sonia Citron dribbled the ball near half court with just over 30 seconds left in the third quarter against the Phoenix Mercury on Tuesday. She curled around a high ball screen from center Lauren Betts, drawing both of their defenders. She saw the double-team coming but took one more dribble, letting Betts roll farther into the paint, before lobbing the ball to the 6’7 rookie for an and-one. On their next possession, the Mystics ran the same action.

On Sunday, it was up in the air whether starting center Shakira Austin would play for the Washington Mystics against the Portland Fire. She was a late addition to the injury report with knee soreness, and the team wanted to see how her knee felt in warmups before clearing her to play. It was also up in the air when the Mystics would clinch a playoff spot. They needed a win over Portland as well as a loss by the Chicago Sky to secure their first playoff appearance since 2023.

WASHINGTON — Shortly before Betnijah Laney-Hamilton debuted for the Washington Mystics on Aug. 11, head coach Sydney Johnson was asked how much of the playbook Laney-Hamilton had learned since the Mystics claimed her off waivers three days earlier. Johnson said she was still learning it, but he pointed out that she knew that night’s opponent, the Las Vegas Aces, better than anyone else on the roster.
