Fashion Illustration 101
I am so excited to be making this post. Although fashion illustration is a huge part of my career and something I genuinely enjoy in my free time, I've realized I rarely post about it! So today I’m here to spill most of my process and share a few secrets. MATERIALS - PAPER Lately I’ve been loving the New Soho Sketchbook (which I originally discovered through the great Boston general store-more on my general store hauls here).
Jenny Walton Knows the Secret to Whimsical Dressing Original
3 min read In honor of our latest issue, ELLE continues its partnership with Substack, enlisting some of the platform’s most-followed fashion writers—including Liana Satenstein, Jalil Johnson, Emilia Petrarca, Viv Chen, and Laurel Pantin—to pen essays accompanying our fashion shoots. The latest: Jenny Walton, of Jenny Sais Quoi, who reflects on our May issue celebration of eccentric art-patron style. Daniel Archer Handbag, Dolce & Gabbana. Daniel Archer Shirt, trousers, Hermès.
How to Know When It’s Time to Go
A nice little place to chat, that isn't Instagram. A nice little place to chat, that isn't Instagram. By Jenny Walton
What I Learned This Year
“Do you take this flight often?” I asked the stranger who, six months later, would be my fiancé. It was a Thursday morning (April 24th to be exact), and I was flying from New York to San Francisco. I had accepted an invitation to a press trip in Napa, mainly because it would mean traveling to the US, a country that, for some inexplicable reason, was suddenly calling me back after several years of living abroad.
What I've Been Wearing Lately
Well, this week, my vintage skirt suit set from Relic made her Milanese debut (several times)! I can’t stop wearing it. I tried it here with Herbert Levine heels, but wore it most often with these old Prada men’s shoes (which are very hard to find).
The Magic of Materials
I’ve always been drawn to vintage pieces for the stories they carry — each garment lived a life before it found me, and that mystery is part of the magic. But every piece of clothing begins its story long before it reaches our hands. Wool, cotton, and every other natural fiber undergo an intricate journey before being transformed into objects that give us comfort and keep us warm.
Brooching the Subject
One of the best things about Milan is the fresh flower market. I’ve been lucky the past few months, as they continue to stock soft pink double-petal lilies. I finally had the idea to wear one that had split from the stem as a corsage. The word corsage comes from the French bouquet de corsage, meaning a "bouquet of the bodice.” Due to the evolution of dresses and the slashing of sleeves and straps, a corsage is now often worn at the wrist, but initially it was worn at the bust.
The Road Less Traveled
After only seeing it once or twice, going to stay in the first house you’ve ever bought is a scary thing. It’s kind of like deciding to marry someone after one or two very cordial dates. What will it be like sleeping together? What are they really like once you get to know them? Will they smell in the morning? Will you still love them once you start noticing the cracks in the wall…or was it all one huge, lonely mistake? I had planned to make the journey to Tuscany easier by arriving before dusk.

It’s for this reason the girl about town (Milan, at the moment) has such a following. The key to pulling off her vintage looks (which span several decades) is her styling prowess. Think a vintage brooch with a modern-day Prada cashmere cardigan or a 1950s circle skirt with the latest Gucci slingbacks.
Maria Baer: Maximizing Minimalism
This November, we’re exploring careers that most likely weren’t, aren’t, or won’t be listed as a potential college major–not specifically, anyway. Many of these folks have made their way to their current occupations by way of a more traditional nine-to-five, like our girl Maria Baer who is the queen of organized living and owner of The Baer Minimalist. Baer moved to Indianapolis in 2006 and spent about a decade in a variety of traditional professions.

An Interview with Jody Galadriel Friend
Words by Haley Collins Photos by Leo Soyfer Following a run of shows as the bass player for Lily & Madeleine, Jody Galadriel Friend’s thoughts turn to the creative balancing act she’s managing. While the primary focus remains leading her band Public Universal Friend (PUF), she continues to explore roles playing in other people’s bands and pursuing alternative creative outlets. Embracing her multifacetedness, Friend sees this exploration as a healthy way to take off some of the pressure she feels.
Navigating the Nap: Rapper Drayco McCoy reflects on his time as an artist in Indianapolis
SJ: How have you gone about reaching people outside of Indianapolis with your music? DM: The internet has always been a huge tool of mine. It’s really hard to understand sometimes, especially since things come in waves. Back in the day, people on popular blogs and YouTube pages were posting about me, and my music was going up that way.
Flipping the Script on ADHD
This month, PATTERN has highlighted focus which naturally brings stories and experiences of those who have taken their ADHD/neurodivergence by the reins. We want to demonstrate that this is not a topic that needs, or benefits from, tip-toeing–and that it is precisely that: a topic, not a problem. Let’s get real here for a second. ADHD, undiagnosed and untreated, is nothing to be glorified.
May I Have Your Attention, Please?
When I say that my attention feels strained, I know I’m in good company, and I’m positive that there is nothing I can add to this conversation that you’ve not heard before. TLDR; our attention is one of the most valuable assets out there, and I’m convinced that–without giving it a second thought–we squander it, constantly. I won’t bore you with the details, but let’s be clear that I’ve not figured this puzzle out.
Be Here Now: Actor Jen Johansen on Staying Present on Stage
Jenny Walton: Alright, let’s start with the obvious one. In a world of staying home and access to infinite streamable content, why do you love and believe in live performances? Jen Johansen: Because living and breathing in a room with people who are sharing stories is not like anything else that you can get on a screen. The reason that I really love theater is the gift of taking the journey from beginning to end.
It's Nothing If Not a Collaboration
If you stop by on any random Tuesday or Thursday, you’ll find the PATTERN office filled with people. Staff, creative fellows, seasonal interns, and an assortment of visitors all humming away at whatever projects are at hand. If you stop by on any of the other workdays, odds are good that you’ll just run into me. While I love the occasional WFH, my heart has always belonged to a team. Even when they’re not physically here, I can still feel that collective buzz.

Unsolicited Advice: How to Find the Right Job
Anyone watching the fallout of SVP bank collapse? Personally, I don’t have the stomach for it. The Hunger Games vibe of the tech startup world is too much for me. I had a front-row seat to this action at my last job, and it’s one of those things you can’t unsee. Jobs are like that, right? If you’re paying attention to what’s happening around you, you’re going to learn a lot. Some of it will be amazing and some of it will be infuriating and most of it will be useful to you.
My Style: Meg Hart
Meg and I met in second grade. Outside of my own family, there is no human in my life today who I have known for as long as I have known Meg. And for as long as I have known Meg, I’ve thought of her style as something like the embodiment of a box of only the best crayon colors dressed from head to toe in patterns, layers, and bigass jewelry and hair accessories.

Need a fashion pick-me-up without buyer’s remorse?
Delivered to us this season by a designer cast list including Attico, The Row, Celine, Saint Laurent, Tibi and Alexander Wang, dainty sandals are the easiest way to add a sprinkling of sex appeal to any outfit. These effortless slip-on-and-gos have graced the feet of every serious runway show-goer from Pernille Teisbaek and Blanca Miró Scrimieri to Giorgia Tordini and Vanessa Hong – counterbalance their innate femininity by teaming them with avant-garde shapes or monochromatic suiting.
27 great street-style looks from Fashion Week
Raf Simons kicked off our western obsession when he sent cowboy boots down the runway for his Calvin Klein 205W39NYC debut back in FW17. That might sound like eons ago in the fashion world, but instead of waning, our ardor is intensifying. This season virtually every show-goer had imbued their look with a little way-out-west touch, whether in the form of fringed denim, saddle bags, pie-crust collars, chunky belts or Navajo-style knits.
Instructions for Life
Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk. When you lose, don’t lose the lesson. (In the age of participation trophies, if no one loses, do they learn the lesson?) Follow the three R’s: Respect for self; Respect for others; Responsibility for all your actions. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck. (Read THIS) Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.

Shopping Secrets From This Year's Hottest New Street Style Star
Rapt observers of street style will be familiar with the name, face, and distinctive flair of Jenny Walton. The Parsons alum turned designer turned fashion director of The Sartorialist—her boyfriend Scott Schuman's iconic blog and photographic empire—is a burgeoning Instagram starlet and front row fixture at fashion weeks around the world.
What Exactly Does "Clean" Nonprofit Data Look Like?
Admit it. At one point in your life the phrase “clean data” didn’t mean anything to you. Honestly, I still think of numbers in a bubble bath every time I hear it. (Now you will, too!) The good news is that the term “clean data” involves short, pronounceable words and is reasonably self-explanatory. Unfortunately, “reasonably self explanatory” isn’t super helpful if you’re imagining numbers in a bathtub. Trust me.
