Jesse Washington was born in Brooklyn to an artist father and social worker mother. His family moved to Poughkeepsie, NY, when he was in grade school, and he began his career covering sports for The Poughkeepsie Journal the summer after his freshman year at Yale University. The next summer he returned to the Journal and switched to local news. He got his first front-page byline on his 19th birthday, on a story about Louis Farrakhan’s visit to the home of Tawana Brawley.

As a kid growing up in Detroit in the 1950s and ‘60s, David Roberts loved baseball. He lived a few miles from the Detroit Tigers’ home stadium. But young Dave was a Cleveland Indians fan – because his grandfather told him the Tigers, due to racist ownership, had been one of the last Major League Baseball teams to sign a Black player. Cleveland, meanwhile, had integrated the American League in 1947 with Larry Doby, a few months after Jackie Robinson’s debut.

There’s nothing not to love about Bam Adebayo. He’s an amazing basketball player, by all accounts super solid off the court, and one-half of my favorite celebrity couple. But he does not belong between Wilt Chamberlain and Kobe Bean Bryant on the list of players with the most points in an NBA game. It ain’t Bam’s fault. When looking for explanations for his shocking and somewhat perplexing explosion, let’s just charge it to the game.
