Hypoxia-induced metastatic heterogeneity in pancreatic cancer
Abstract In solid tumors, hypoxia is a key driver of metastasis by promoting cellular plasticity and chromosomal instability (CIN). Despite this, the mechanisms by which malignant cells concurrently co-opt these elements of hypoxic adaptation to promote metastasis remains unclear. Here we report that hypoxia promotes metastasis by suppressing the JmjC-containing histone lysine demethylase KDM8.

EARTH, ATMOSPHERIC, AND PLANETARY SCIENCES Near-infrared image of Uranus and its moons from the James Webb Space Telescope. Image credit: NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope. How the moons of Uranus formed The spin axis of Uranus is tilted by 98° relative to the Solar System, possibly due to an ancient giant impact. The planet’s five regular moons orbit in the same tilted plane, but the origin of the moons’ tilted orbits is unclear. Michael Brown et al.

Initial organization and progressive expansion of the math-responsive brain network during the first school years
Significance How the child’s brain changes with schooling, as it acquires the abstract concepts of mathematics, remains unclear. By longitudinally tracking children’s brain responses to mathematical sentences from preschool through early elementary school, we show that the cortical architecture for mathematics is already in place before schooling, with early specialization for arithmetic and geometry.

Biomolecular assemblies through weak noncovalent interactions: Higher-order transient structures and their condensate phase
Abstract Recent data suggest that many membrane proteins spontaneously organize into spatial patterns through weak noncovalent interactions. These weak interactions are protein type-specific and underlie the formation of higher-order transient structures (HOTS), which can function as 10 to 100 nanometer-sized, transient hubs of membrane signaling.

Why environmental scientists need ethics training more than ever before
In the face of mounting environmental crises, scientists and decision-makers must often balance complex and competing goals, including mitigating climate change, conserving biodiversity, and supporting human livelihoods (1). These goals sometimes align to produce win–win outcomes for people, animals, and ecosystems—for example, community-based conservation projects or crop-planting incentives that benefit farmers and pollinators.

Debt as a blessing: A capital screening mechanism
Significance A popular narrative holds that when growth exceeds interest rates, fiscal deficits are nearly costless. We challenge this view by showing that fiscal policy shapes equilibrium multiplicity and capital allocation through an interest-rate screening channel. Persistent primary deficits generate multiple steady states, and the economy converges to the unique stable equilibrium: a misallocation trap with scarce safe assets, suppressed interest rates, and widespread inefficient investment.
