What began last year as a community Juneteenth celebration intended to bring people together took an unexpected turn this year. Six weeks before the event designed to reflect and celebrate the beauty of heritage, and recommit to justice, love, and unity, church leaders were made aware of a racial covenant on property it bought to expand its parking lot. The holiday marks the anniversary of when the news of emancipation finally reached the last enslaved African Americans in Texas.

City hires experienced officer

The Elk River City Council approved the hiring of Katherine Harris as a police officer during its June 15 meeting. Harris was ti begin her new position June 16. City officials said the department has been working since September to fill vacancies created by retirements, career changes and additional grant-funded opportunities. According to city documents, 52 applications were received during the recruitment process.

Planning Commission recommends denial, seeks pause on future data centers

The Elk River Planning Commission voted June 23 to recommend denial of a proposed ordinance amendment that would allow data centers in the city’s Light Industrial district and urged the City Council to consider a six-month to one-year moratorium while the city develops a broader policy framework. The recommendation follows weeks of public opposition surrounding a proposal by Elk River Capital LLC and Swervo Development to convert a vacant industrial building at 19178 Industrial Blvd.
