Self-driving cars are safer than human drivers in most routine driving, but preparing them for perilous moments is a long, costly process. Homing in on near misses, rather than crashes, can expedite the process and lead to safer performance. Testing in University of Michigan Engineering’s Mcity Test Facility demonstrated a 90% improvement in a vehicle’s safety performance.

Death-defying protein found in tardigrades preserves synthetic cells

Researchers have shown how a tardigrade protein protects cell membranes, using the proteins to preserve synthetic cells that were dried out and rehydrated in the lab. The finding could lead to a way to store and transport medicines and other biological products at room temperature, rather than refrigerated or frozen. Researchers at University of Michigan Engineering worked with the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering.
