Second heat dome to give way to resort-style weather

For a second time in three weeks Illinois is feeling the effects of a heat dome. The first one hit the state June 30 into the Fourth of July weekend. The second has arrived this week with base temperatures in the 90s and heat index readings reaching into triple digits. But conditions should turn for the better this weekend.

A month of variability. That’s how DTN Agriculture Meteorologist John Baranick paints the rest of July. “We’ve already had kind of a hot pattern last week for the first few days of July,” he said during a Tuesday conversation with RFD Radio. “We luckily ended with a bunch of rain to help kind of ease ourselves off of that.” Another front is coming through in a “couple of pieces” this week. “We’ll get some decent rainfall out of that, really across the state,” Baranick said.

Storms to break up heat dome this weekend

Illinois continues to swelter in a weeklong heat dome, but July won’t stay that way. “A heat dome is basically summer telling us that it has arrived, therefore the jet stream rides to our north,” said Freese-Notis Weather meteorologist Paul Otto during a Tuesday visit with RFD Radio. “It looks like this dome is specifically for us in Illinois and portions of Indiana.” Heat indices will be staying above 100 into the weekend.
