He wasn’t there to talk about his films (much to the disappointment of us film nerds) but to talk about meditation. * From his first sentence I was hooked. Well, well, well. It has been a little warm here in Newcastle upon Tyne over the last week or so — nowhere near as hot as other places, and I do spend the entire winter complaining about the cold, so I’m trying not to moan too much. But I’ve been relying on this cooling sequence a lot, so I thought I’d share it with you. I actually had something completely different planned for today, but when I went to record it I thought — why not just film what I’m doing in my own practice during the heatwave.

I Stalled on a Roundabout and Didn't Drive for Ten Years

I didn’t learn to drive until I was in my 30s. Well, that’s not quite true. I passed my test in my 20s after trying to learn on and off for almost a decade. Then on my first trip out alone I stalled on a major roundabout and decided that actually, driving wasn’t for me. So I didn’t drive. For almost ten years. And the longer I didn’t drive, the more shame, the more fear, and the more stories I told myself about driving got embedded in. Driving became this big dragon sitting over my life.
