Haggen Food & Pharmacy – which operates exclusively in the Pacific Northwest – this week announced plans to acquire Albertsons and Safeway stores in Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona and California. There are a few things you can’t miss when you walk into Seafood City. First up are the fish – splayed on ice, eyeballs ready to be inspected. And there’s ube ice cream, crispy chicharrones and salted duck eggs waiting to be plucked. Filipinos, who lack a native grocery in Orange County, typically travel up to an hour outside the county to get their fix of familiar ingredients. They won’t have to wait much longer when Seafood City opens its first location by year’s end in Irvine.

The keto diet—a high fat, moderate protein, very low carbohydrate plan—might be eclipsing paleo and Whole30 as the hot diet trend of 2019. The diet calls for cutting out major groups of foods, such as grains, legumes and dairy and sometimes cutting back on certain nutrient-rich vegetables. The idea is to get your body to switch from burning carbs to burning fat for fuel, in turn producing ketones, leading to ketosis.

Heroin is sadly normal in the OC high school drug scene. I was proud of my story that looked at innovative ways schools are addressing it.
