Farmers are defending the law big pork wants to destroy Original
I was taken aback by Duane Stateler’s Oct. 11 op-ed, “Pork prices are rising thanks to California — Congress can fix it.” Like Stateler, I am a multi-generation farmer. My family has raised livestock and grain on the same Missouri land for over a century. But although we share a love for farming, we part ways on what’s best for America’s independent hog producers. California’s Proposition 12, which set higher welfare standards for animals sold in that state, isn’t a threat to farmers like me.

Beyond dollars and devils, AVL’s Halloween season has heart
Wearing an orange staff T-shirt, Beth Dalton Rathbone restocks shelves and racks at Halloween Express in Asheville as shoppers shuffle through them again. “Seventy-five thousand people will come through our doors,” she says while tidying a costume rack. “And we don’t even set up until the end of August. We don’t start selling until the second week in September.” Beth, who coaches a local swim team, spots a smiling customer and offers assistance.
Reader Opinion – Exposing NCBA’s Distortion of the Facts - Western Ag Reporter
Editor’s Note: Joe Maxwell submitted this opinion piece in direct response to the NCBA Down Dirt Roads opinion that was published on the WAR website on September 2 and in print this week (September 14). Squealing, swimming pigs and more!
Dale Earnhog and Kevin Hamhock are excited before the race. Oinking with anticipation, Justin Tenderloin or Snoop Hog jockey for position. The audience — known as “pig rooters” — responds with a thunderous pig call. Each onlooker throws their support behind the pig of their choice. And ... they’re off! Lindsey Lo-Ham and Britney Spare-Ribs take the lead. Who will win?
ᏗᏬᏂᏏ--We will speak!
The Cherokee language is deeply tied to Cherokee identity; yet generations of assimilation efforts by the U.S. government and anti-Indigenous stigmas have forced the Tri-Council of Cherokee tribes to declare a State of Emergency for the language in 2019. While there are 430,000 Cherokee citizens in the three federally-recognized tribes, fewer than 2,000 fluent speakers remain—the majority of whom are elderly.

Republican tax plan helps monopolies, hurts family farms | The Kansas City Star
America as the land of opportunity is under threat. America’s family farmers, small business owners, and middle class workers have long believed that if you work hard, you can get ahead. But in the last 30 years, the growing trend toward concentration of corporate power has increasingly put the American dream out of reach for ordinary citizens. Family farmers have particularly felt the wrath of consolidation as they increasingly lack open, competitive markets to sell their goods.

Four Dominican Sisters returned to a country house outside Jackson, a retreat from their labors at a major Southern health care system. One Sister mentioned, “Hey, Whoopi Goldberg is staying down the street while filming a movie.” “Oh!” another exclaimed. “Let’s go see Whoopi!” A guard blocked the house.
Cornershot: Celebrating first flights - Roanoke Times: Cornershot
As I approached a spot in our rear lawn to transplant narcissus bulbs, I saw movement beneath a crape myrtle bush. The head of a small bird appeared, and I thought I had disturbed a nest, but six tiny biddy-like creatures emerged one by one and moved along the top of an 8-foot retaining wall. Then I heard a clucking sound and wondered what kind of bird I had discovered. The riddle was answered as a large turkey hen emerged around the end of the wall.
