"Liberal Democrats are hypocrites." The words hung in the air of my Democracy, Media, and Politics classroom in November 2016. One of my students, from a Republican-leaning family, had just accused his classmates of preaching inclusion while practicing exclusion—"my way or the highway," he called it. The silence that followed was excruciating. But that discomfort became the most valuable teaching moment of my career, and it's a lesson our polarized society desperately needs.
