But Raleigh’s largest hospital system, WakeMed, appeared to do just that when it pledged to pair up with Charlotte-based Atrium, the state’s largest health care provider, this spring. Atrium offered $2 billion to build new facilities in Wake County as part of a board-approved combination of the two hospital groups, while cross-Triangle rival UNC Health made its own pitch that more than doubled Atrium’s bid.
