Interaction of Bunyamwera virus non-structural protein NSm with cellular BNIP1 is required for efficient viral gene expression and replication
Abstract Bunyamwera virus (BUNV) is the prototypical member of the Peribunyaviridae family of arthropod-borne viruses and possesses a genome comprising three segments of negative-sense RNA, named small, medium and large.
Monday Musings - A good Kraken road trip - Sound Of Hockey
Despite the stinker of a game on Sunday night, the Kraken’s road trip can be considered nothing less than a success. The Kraken managed seven out of 10 possible points and showed some significant compete in all but the last game against the Florida Panthers. This road trip was a good test for a team that a lot of national media had ranked near the bottom of the preseason standings. Yet despite the strong start to the season, they are still one point off last season’s pace through nine games.
Northern Virginia animal cruelty case leads to renewed call for industry regulation
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (7News) — As the Chief of Animal Services for the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, Tony Rankin knows his facility is subject to state inspection every other year. That's not the case for the hundreds of private grooming and boarding facilities in the state. "As an animal control officer, I'm not really allowed to go and just inspect these places," Rankin told 7News.

Monday Musings: A good start for the Kraken
The Kraken are off to a great start, but I’m not celebrating anything just yet. In case you missed it, the Kraken kicked off the season last Thursday with a dominant 6-1 win over the Flames in Calgary, with six different players finding the back of the net. Two days later, they looked destined to earn at least a point in Edmonton against the Oilers before an unfortunate bounce in a tie game with less than three minutes remaining left Leon Draisaitl all alone to put Edmonton ahead for good.
'You treat me like a chump': Disabled veteran challenges tax on new Charles County homes
CHARLES COUNTY, Md. (7News) — Nobody likes paying taxes, and in roughly half the states in the country, at least one group of taxpayers gets a tax break. Virginia and Maryland are among the 22 states that provide military veterans, who are 100-percent disabled, with a property tax exemption. It’s one of the ways disabled veterans in those states are paid back for their service and sacrifice. It's also the reason why Jannine Pete, a retired Air Force Master Sgt.

Monday Musings: Here we go for Kraken season!
The preseason is done, and the games will count from here on out, starting with the season opener in Calgary on Thursday. It’s difficult to extrapolate many insights from a shortened preseason when only the last two games resembled NHL lineups. It’s also worth noting that one of those games, the Kraken versus Flames preseason game on Thursday night, was basically the full NHL Kraken playing against Calgary’s AHL team.
"This is what a death spiral looks like": DC landlords offer councilmember dire warning
WASHINGTON (7News) — The warning from Patrick McAnaney, a development director for one of the larger affordable housing providers within the district was stark. ""Housing providers are selling off their properties to stay afloat. This is what a death spiral looks like," he told D.C. Councilmember At-Large Robert White, who chairs the D.C. Council's Housing Committee. McAnaney's business, Somerset Development Company, manages seven buildings within the district, totaling 908 units.
Five things that need to go right for the Seattle Kraken
The Kraken weren’t as far away from a playoff spot last season as their final standing might suggest. Yes, there were plenty of frustrating nights, and the brutal home stretch where they couldn’t seem to get out of their own way. But they were still hanging around the playoff race into March despite injuries, a league-worst penalty kill, and an offense that struggled to score consistently. Making the playoffs this season doesn’t require a miracle.

Prosecutors lobby Maryland lawmakers for harsher penalties in vehicular homicides
Even on a sun-splashed day of gardening in her Riverdale, Maryland, home, the memory of a snowy day in February can easily creep into Velma Hibbert’s mind. “It was terrible. MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (7News) — Three to four times each week, Tamar Weinsweig makes the roughly 20-minute drive from her home in Poolesville, Maryland, to be with her daughter Raphaela at a place no parent should ever have to visit a child. Her destination is the Garden of Remembrance memorial park cemetery in Clarksburg. Raphaela Weinsweig died April 18 from injuries sustained in a head-on car crash. She was 26. “Raphaela was a bundle of fun. She was a goofball.
Data Dump: Scoring chances under Lane Lambert
After digging into Lane Lambert’s impact on Kraken goal scoring in my last piece, I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was still more research to look at or areas to explore. Goal scoring tells part of the story, but it doesn’t tell us how teams are generating their chances.
Data Dump: Goal scoring under Lane Lambert
Aside from a shooting‑percentage bender in 2022–23, the Seattle Kraken haven’t exactly been known as a high‑scoring team. But last season’s offensive output felt particularly challenging. Lane Lambert arrived with a reputation for structure and defensive responsibility, and the Kraken have certainly leaned into that identity. Now that we have a full season of Lambert hockey to look at, it feels fair to ask how much his coaching impacted the team’s goal scoring.
DC landlords ask Congress to review beleaguered rental housing market, court system
WASHINGTON (7News) — An organization representing D.C. Landlords has asked Congress to conduct a "comprehensive review" of the rental housing system within the District of Columbia. It's a request that's already received push-back from a D.C. councilmember, who sees any Congressional involvement as a threat to D.C. Home Rule.

WASHINGTON (7News) — Veronica Hegens has her home back. For nearly nine months, the retired Army major was embroiled in a legal dispute with a woman who was never on any lease agreement and who hadn’t paid rent since October, placing Hegens in a tight spot with her lenders. She told the 7News I-Team in March that she faced foreclosure on her Southwest D.C. rental property.
USA Hockey Membership Report
It’s become an annual tradition here at Sound Of Hockey to dig into the latest USA Hockey registration numbers, and the 2025‑26 season gives us plenty to chew on. Membership continues to climb nationwide, but the story this year is less about explosive growth and more about steady, sustainable momentum, especially in youth and female participation.
Pacific Division offseason check‑in
This offseason has brought a steady stream of roster movement across the Pacific Division. Between an unusually high number of trades, a wave of early‑July free‑agent signings and a signed offer sheet that shook a franchise in Southern California, it’s been a little tricky to keep track of who’s coming, who’s going, and how each team’s depth chart is shaping up.

On Wednesday night, Perez was arrested, facing two counts of assault. The charges stem from allegations made by a 13-year-old student at Cooper Middle School, a former 7th grader. Perez is now suspended without pay as a result of those allegations. Several weeks ago, 7News first heard from a parent of the 13-year-old student.

The 2026‑27 Seattle Kraken schedule: Travel and road‑trip daydreaming
The NHL released its schedule last week for the upcoming 2026‑27 season, which means it’s time for my annual tradition: digging into travel distances, back‑to‑backs, and identifying any appetizing road trips on the schedule. Even before the schedule dropped, we already knew two big wrinkles were coming. First, the Kraken will play two games in Helsinki, Finland against the defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes as part of the NHL Global Series.
Capitol Cornerstone's whereabouts still baffle historians, scholars, amateur sleuths
STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. (7News) — The mystery began more than 233 years ago in Stafford, Virginia, when a massive block of sandstone was cut on what today is known as Government Island. The historic park situated on the banks of Aquia Creek, a tributary of the Potomac River, served as the quarry that supplied the sandstone used to build the U.S. Capitol and White House.
Charles County school security chief tied to company doing business in district
CHARLES COUNTY, Md. (7News) — In late April of this past school year, police recovered handguns from students on back-to-back days at St. Charles High School in Charles County, Maryland, prompting Superintendent Maria Navarro to act quickly. In early May, she sent Charles County Commissioners an “urgent request for funding to specifically target immediate school safety and security initiatives.” $300,000 for a mobile weapons detection system.
Despite opposition, sprawling internet child safety bill clears house
WASHINGTON (7News) — The Kids Internet and Digital Safety Act, or KIDS Act, a sprawling collection of 14 different internet child safety bills, passed the House of Representatives Monday night, despite fierce opposition from free speech advocates and longtime child safety advocates. The legislation cleared the House on a bipartisan 267-to-117 vote, with 47 House members not voting. If it becomes law, the KIDS Act will require the following: Age verification to access mature content.
The Jason Robertson fallout – empowerment and the “no no-move clause”
The single biggest narrative surrounding the Seattle Kraken over their five seasons of existence has been consistently the lack of a true, elite superstar. They’ve had depth and at times had flashes of success, but they’ve never had that definitive game-breaker that can consistently get them that pivotal goal.
Live Blog: Day 2 of the 2026 NHL Draft – Seattle Kraken
Welcome to the Sound Of Hockey NHL Draft Live Blog! The Seattle Kraken enter Day 2 of the NHL Draft withsix picks—barring any trades, that’s the fewest selections they’ve had in any draft in their five-year history. We’ll be updating this post throughout the day as the Kraken make their picks. The most recent updates will appear at the top, so scroll down if you want to catch up on earlier news.
Grading the Seattle Kraken’s draft classes to date
It’s officially draft week here at Sound Of Hockey. While the Seattle Kraken made waves over the weekend by trading for Mackie Samoskevich and re-signing Bobby McMann to a five-year, $34.5 million contract, they also must now quickly shift their attention to how they will continue to stockpile young prospects into the organization.
HSI spending plan includes critical funds to rescue exploited children, hunt predators
WASHINGTON (7News) — Child safety advocates, including College Football Hall of Famer Tim Tebow, are celebrating recently passed legislation, which they said will make a significant difference in the fight against online child exploitation. On June 10, President Donald Trump signed the Secure America Act into law.
Study: In a high-tech school security environment, an old school solution saves lives
ARLINGTON, Va. (7News) — Outside Arlington’s Wakefield High School, dozens of doors lead to the inside of the building. Good luck finding one unlocked. Each day, School Safety Coordinator Thomas Johnson and his colleagues check to make sure those doors are secure. Access to the building is limited to two dual-entry checkpoints, where staff must scan keycards, and visitors are required to produce ID just to enter the front office for further screening.
Former Alabama football coach Nick Saban urges Senators to reform college sports
WASHINGTON (7News) — Legendary former Alabama football coach Nick Saban found himself in unfamiliar territory on Wednesday, a Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Science and Transportation. It was an unlikely setting for the seven-time national champion to sound the alarm about the future of college athletics, but to listen to Saban's testimony was to hear the thoughts of a man convinced college sports is heading full speed into disaster.
Seattle Torrent expansion simulation
News has been trickling out for weeks about the upcoming PWHL expansion draft, which will stock the four new teams joining the league this offseason. Rather than walk through every rule and sub‑rule of the process, I’m focusing on how this could realistically play out for the Seattle Torrent. This is when existing teams submit their three-player protected lists for players already under contract for 2026-27. There is a wrinkle: a team can sign and protect a pending free agent from another roster.
Tim Tebow’s crusade against child exploitation leads to progress, political setbacks
WASHINGTON (7News) — The moment made national headlines, in large part because of the messenger, former college football star Tim Tebow, but more so because of the message.
What went wrong for the 2025-26 Seattle Kraken
When a season unravels the way the Seattle Kraken’s did, there’s usually a laundry list of things people want to point to as the cause. I won’t hit everything on everyone’s list, but when you zoom out and look at the entire year, these are the areas that went wrong for the 2025–26 Seattle Kraken. Let’s start with the most obvious one. The Kraken penalty kill finished the season 31st in the league, operating at just 72 percent. It wasn’t consistently bad, but the lows were really low.
Juries are punishing Big Tech for harming kids, yet Congress remains paralyzed
WASHINGTON (7News) — Is Big Tech having its Big Tobacco moment? On March 24, a jury in Santa Fe, New Mexico, ordered Meta to pay $375 million in civil penalties after finding the social media platform failed to protect children from sexual predators. On March 25, a Los Angeles, California, jury ordered Meta and Google to pay a combined $6 million in civil damages to a 20-year-old woman, who alleged the platforms were addictive and a threat to the mental health of young people.

Candidate for Prince George’s County Clerk of Courts confronts criminal past
PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. (7News) — In a country that believes in second chances, Qiana Johnson hopes that sentiment extends to the ballot box. In October 2014, Johnson was indicted on ten counts for her role in a housing fraud scheme in which vacant homes in Prince George’s County were obtained through forged real estate documents. In June 2015, she was sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in prison, but she was released in August 2017 after serving 2 1/2 years. “I've led with that on panels.

What went right for the 2025-26 Seattle Kraken
The 2025–26 Seattle Kraken season didn’t end the way anyone hoped. A team that spent most of the year in the playoff mix unraveled after the Olympic break, leaving fans frustrated, confused, and staring down another long offseason.
Monday Musings: Winning is still fun
A week ago, the Kraken were all but eliminated. This week didn’t save the season, but it reminded us why we still watch. The Kraken split their four games with two wins and two losses, but the two wins came at home, which matters more. As the saying goes: if you’re going to stink, stink on the road. The week opened with back‑to‑back losses to the Winnipeg Jets and Minnesota Wild. As ugly as the 6–2 and 5–2 results were, there was noticeably more compete than we’d seen in the games leading up to them.
Monday Musings: Kraken are virtually eliminated
Last Monday, the Kraken’s playoff hopes were wobbling but still technically alive — thin ice, sure, but not fully cracked. I said three points would be acceptable, fewer than two would be devastating, and… well, here we are. Devastated. I didn’t expect much out of the midweek games against Edmonton and Utah. Aside from a brief 2–0 lead against the Mammoth, there wasn’t a lot to cheer for in either game. The malaise carried into the weekend, when the Kraken lost 4–2 to the lowly Chicago Blackhawks.
Monday Musings: Kraken are staying in the fight
The Kraken might have just saved their season with their performance over the last week. After opening this six‑game road trip (technically, they played five games, came home for two nights, and are heading back out to Edmonton on Monday) with two losses, they were staring down a brutal stretch against Florida, Tampa Bay, and Buffalo.
Legendary Georgetown coach John Thompson remembered for walkout protest of NCAA rule
WASHINGTON (7News) — Ronny Thompson still touches his father’s statue every time he walks by it. It’s impossible to miss. The full-size bronze likeness of “Big John,” as he was known, stands 6-feet-10-inches tall in the rotunda of the John R. Thompson Jr. Intercollegiate Athletics Center on the Georgetown campus, towering over visitors. An imposing figure on the court, John Thompson once backed up Celtics legend Bill Russell as a center on the hardwood.
Identification of cellular ion channels that facilitate Hazara nairovirus infection enables selection of clinically approved compounds with anti-nairoviral properties
Abstract The Nairoviridae family of segmented negative-sense RNA viruses includes the serious human pathogen Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV), associated with a case/fatality rate of up to 40% for which no approved vaccines or treatments exist. Nairoviruses internalize via endocytosis and pass through the endolysosomal network, exploiting the changing ionic environment to promote envelope fusion.
Monday Musings: The devastation continues
It was a devastating week for the Kraken, yet remarkably, they remain in the playoff hunt, albeit hanging on the outside right now. This is uncharted territory for the franchise, which has never truly been in a nip‑and‑tuck race to get into the playoffs. In three of their four seasons, the Kraken were obvious sellers at the deadline and well out of the picture by March. The only exception was Season 2, when they maintained an eight‑point cushion and never really flirted with falling out.
