Glasgow's Centre for Contemporary Arts Archive Faces Liquidation as Artists Fight to Save It
When a city's art institution collapses, the loss of programming is immediate and visible. The loss of its records, though, can be permanent. Campaigners, politicians, and arts figures have called on the Scottish government to intervene after the archive of Glasgow's Centre for Contemporary Arts was listed among the assets of the insolvent organization.
Odysseus and the Limits of Ancient Heroism
Homer’s Odyssey is an epic story with an epic protagonist—Odysseus is not simply a skilled warrior but also a thinker, a trickster, and an “obstinate, cunning and irrepressible intriguer.”1 Although this is a deeply heroic work that pioneered the idea of centering a story on a rational, proactive character, it also depends upon a premise fundamentally opposed to the conditions that make heroism possible.
Border control remains an obstacle to seamless travel
The aviation industry likes to talk about seamless travel, but for many passengers, that promise still ends at the border, writes Valour Consultancy’s John Devlin. Even as airports continue to modernise check-in, security and boarding – often at different speeds and with varying degrees of success – a single friction point at immigration can undo hours of careful optimisation elsewhere in the journey. The uncomfortable truth is that the technology needed to transform border control already exists.
Elucidating the relationship between affinity and potency in the performance of therapeutic IgE
Abstract IgE antibodies exert strong immunostimulatory effects and their anti-tumour effectiveness is currently being assessed in clinical trials. The high affinity of IgE for FcεRI may result in the binding of exogenously delivered antibody to effector cells prior to antigen engagement, potentially leading to IgE being presented multivalently to cancer cells.
Achievement and Moral Cowardice: Who Is the "Real Monster" in Frankenstein?
With Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein adaptation recently hitting movie theaters and streaming services, it’s worth revisiting Mary Shelley’s classic gothic novel (originally published in 1818 as Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus) and a persistent misunderstanding of the story’s meaning.[1] The idea that “man is the real monster” has long been a popular takeaway from the novel, as evidenced in countless published essays and public discussions about its cultural impact.
Debate: Should Libertarians Be Libertines?
216 This article is part of our special print debate issue. Below, you’ll find the case in favour of the resolution, followed by the case against the motion. by John Devlin Should libertarians be libertines? Or at the very least, should libertarians support libertinism and all the earthly vices that come with it—sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll; free love; hedonistic indulgence; and a rejection of traditional moral constraints in favour of radical personal autonomy?
