Surfers find 'earthquake wave' off Western Australia's remote south coast
Out of nowhere the ocean suddenly explodes like a bomb has gone off. "It was like an earthquake, the sound was phenomenal," surf photographer Ben Allen said. "I get goosebumps thinking about it." Mr Allen and surfer Chris White were about 60 kilometres off Western Australia's rugged south coast filming the break they have dubbed The Thing. Loading... Mr White first saw the break about 10 years ago while returning from another location. He said he had been on a mission to find it ever since.
Bombed by U.S. and Israel, does Iran remain a nuclear threat?
US-Israel strikes damaged Iran’s nuclear sites but didn’t eliminate its capabilities; Iran remains a nuclear threat due to enriched uranium and halted inspections. LONDON: Before the ill-judged attack on Israel by the terrorist group Hamas on 7 October 2023, Iran appeared to be riding high. As an energy-rich but isolated middle power, the Islamic Republic had adopted a strategy of proxy warfare, funding a chain of mostly Shiite proxies from the Levant to Mesopotamia down to the Arabian Peninsula.
CORRUPTION AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL IS BAD OPTICS FOR AMERICA
These are troubling times for American democracy. Is Donald Trump setting a dark precedent for future Presidents? LONDON: “All power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely”, wrote the 19th century British historian Lord Acton, underscoring his belief that unchecked power poses the greatest threat to human freedom. Acton would currently be having a field-day in America as corruption runs rampant at the highest level.
How Vladimir Putin could benefit from Israel’s war with Iran
The good news emerging for Vladimir Putin, however, is that following years of two-track diplomacy, he has positioned himself as both a friend to Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu and to the Iranian leadership. LONDON: On the surface, Russia appears to be having a torrid time in the Middle East. First Syria now Iran. The fall of Bashar-al-Assad last year was a major blow to Russia’s reputation as a reliable ally.
Researchers study southern right whale nursery off WA coast as population recovery stalls
Each winter, southern right whales arrive on Western Australia's southern coast to birth their young. In a remarkable natural habit, the mothers return to their place of birth to deliver their calves. It offers scientists a chance to study the species' breeding habits as they travel to the crystal clear bay at Point Ann, on the edge of the Fitzgerald National Park, 520 kilometres south-east of Perth.

A Western Australian town at the heart of the state's renewable energy corridor wants developers to pay a community fund. Narrogin could be surrounded by wind, solar and battery projects. The state government has released draft guidelines on community benefits from renewable energy projects. A town of fewer than 5,000 people is on the precipice of Western Australia's renewable energy boom with $18 billion worth of developments proposed.
Australia has up to 80 tornadoes a year, but many go unseen
When most people think of tornadoes, it's probably the striking and terrifying images from Tornado Alley in the United States. But did you know Australia records anywhere between 30 and 80 tornadoes each year? The weather events are rarely caught on camera, but earlier this week, several people filmed a tornado as it cut a path across farmland near Frankland River in southern Western Australia.
John Dobson - ABC News
Plenty of Australian drivers flash their headlights as a warning to others of police or speed cameras, but whether it's legal or not is another question. West Australian police officer Carlos Correia has explained the rules.
Tornado flips car in Frankland River as storms hit southern WA
An apparent tornado has flipped a car and caused minor damage as storms continue to batter southern Western Australia. As thunderstorm warnings were issued across parts of southern WA on Tuesday afternoon, a tornado touched down near Frankland River — about 280 kilometres south-east of Perth. Resident Nathan Macgregor videoed the tornado as it formed from a thunderstorm sweeping across the Great Southern town.
IT’S NOT ONLY TEMPERATURE, ARCTIC IS ALSO WARMING UP GEOPOLITICALLY
The Arctic, once a zone of cooperation, is now a geopolitical flashpoint as melting ice unlocks resources, trade routes, and sparks rivalry among global superpowers. LONDON: The Arctic is huge, covering almost 4 percent of the globe, and is now a focal point in the global rush for resources. It’s also a place where a new battleground is emerging, with the world’s superpowers gearing up to take each other on in a mad dash for control and strategic superiority.
CAN THE JUSTICE SYSTEM RESCUE AMERICA’S DEMOCRACY FROM TRUMP?
Trump’s unchecked power, Supreme Court immunity, and GOP fear risk transforming American democracy into autocracy. Justice system must respond urgently. During her failed presidential campaign last year, the hapless Vice President Kamala Harris, who unexpectedly found herself the Democratic presidential candidate following President Joe Biden’s bumbling departure, made a number of dire warnings about the threats Donald Trump posed to America’s democracy.
WHY PUTIN HATED UKRAINE SO MUCH THAT HE INVADED IT
Putin invaded Ukraine out of deep resentment, blaming it for the Soviet Union’s collapse and seeking revenge through brutal warfare. LONDON: Just before 10.30 am on the Christian holy day of Palm Sunday last week, a 21-foot Iskander ballistic missile slammed into the eastern Ukraine city of Sumy, packed with worshippers returning home from church. Minutes later, as rescue workers rushed to help, a second Iskander scattered cluster munitions over the same area.
Pack of 60 orcas attack, kill pygmy blue whale off Western Austalia's south coast

A pod of more than 60 orcas hunted and killed an estimated 18-metre-long pygmy blue whale off Western Australia's south coast on Monday, leaving scientists and tourists in awe. The pygmy blue whale is listed as endangered and is a smaller subspecies of the blue whale, which is the largest animal on Earth.
IS AMERICA ABOUT TO BOMB IRAN?
Tensions rise as President Trump escalates military presence in the Middle East, signalling a potential conflict with Iran over nuclear ambitions. LONDON: As the world became fixated on Donald Trump’s surreal chart-waving performance in the White House Rose Garden last Wednesday and the impending trade war, another war is looming; a military conflict which could be hugely more serious.
TRAGEDY OF TURKEY UNDER ERDOGAN
Erdogan’s rise reflects democratic decline, with increasing authoritarianism, media suppression, and opposition suppression, undermining Turkey’s secular republic. London: “Democracies always become tyrannies”, argued the ancient Greek philosopher Plato in his seminal work, the ‘Republic’ around 375 BC. Alive today, he would have plenty of evidence to support his theory. Take Hungary, for example.
IS IRAN ABOUT TO EXPERIENCE a REGIME CHANGE?
Iran faces economic collapse, rising protests, military setbacks, and potential regime change amid leadership uncertainty. LONDON: “The country is like a powder keg, and further economic strain could be the spark that sets it off”, said an official, close to Iran’s government last week. In January alone, Iran’s Statistical Centre disclosed that a third of essential commodities increased in price by more than 40 percent, to leave them more than double that of the previous year.
Ghost net found on Western Australia's south coast as campaigners demand more action
A so-called ghost net has been found washed up along Western Australia's southern coast. The dumped or lost fishing nets are generally found off Australia's northern coast and pose a risk to marine life. Campaigners want more efforts from government and industry to deal with ghost nets. The discovery of a so-called ghost net along Western Australia's southern coastline has sparked renewed calls for accountability on professional and recreational fishers who dump nets into the ocean.
Trump’s Destruction Of America’s Soft Power Opens The Door For China
Trump’s neo-isolationist policies have delighted Beijing as they have put China in the perfect position to claim the throne and sit atop the global command. LONDON: Donald Trump adores being adored. Since moving back into the White House more than a month ago, he has addressed ecstatic fans, rambling on for hours to great applause explaining how he was making America Great Again. For Trump it’s pure theatre. The problem is, like theatre much of what he says is pure fiction.

WILL PUTIN AND TRUMP’S UKRAINE DEAL SERVE THEIR OWN INTERESTS?
Donald Trump did exactly what he promised to do. In the space of a ninety-minute phone call last week, he handed Ukraine on a platter to Vladimir Putin. LONDON: What a disaster it was three years ago when President Vladimir Putin ordered his troops to cross into Ukraine and start a full-scale invasion of the country.
TRUMP’S MACHO TARIFF DIPLOMACY COULD TURN INTO TRADE WARS
Trump’s tariff strategy may trigger global trade wars, harming US reputation and causing widespread economic damage LONDON: “Tariff”, Donald Trump repeatedly said throughout his 2024 campaign, “is the most beautiful word in the dictionary. I love tariffs. I think they’re gonna make us rich.” True to his word, within hours of returning to the Oval Office Trump signed into effect tariffs of 25 percent on all imports from Canada and Mexico, as well as an extra 10 percent on products from China.
NO MR TRUMP, ETHNIC CLEANSING OF PALESTINIANS WON’T WORK
Palestinians condemn Trump’s suggestion to relocate Gaza’s refugees as it would deepen regional instability. London: “No disrespect”, said the young Palestinian, “but the American president is an idiot”. He was speaking to TV cameras as thousands of displaced Palestinians in Gaza were struggling to move back north in the Strip in the hope of finding their homes amongst the rubble. Many had been displaced more than six times after being evicted by the Israeli Defence Forces more than a year ago.
AS TRUMP 2.0 BEGINS, U.S. OLIGARCHS PREPARE TO TAKE CONTROL
The power of oligarchs in autocracies around the world, such as Putin’s Russia, has become normalised. But to see it happening in America is a matter of huge concern to many.

A West Australian surfer says he is extremely lucky to have escaped injury after a shark charged at him and bit a chunk out of his surfboard. "I paddled over a wave and I saw this shark swimming 10 metres away," Mr Kittow said.
THE WORLD HOLDS ITS BREATH AS TRUMP 2.0 BECOMES A REALITY
As the world learned from Trump 1.0, the only predictable thing about Donald Trump is his unpredictability. LONDON: Tomorrow starts the open season of political vandalism in the United States as Donald Trump assumes office as President for the second time. The so-called “deep state”is in line to be gutted, following Trump’s announced intention to purge the federal bureaucracy and administrative state of professional civil servants, who he believes were behind politically motivated attacks on him.
TWENTY FIVE YEARS OF KLEPTO-PUTINISM
Professor Mark Galeotti claims that Putin’s Russia is not so much a mafia state as a state with a nationalised mafia. LONDON: When I met Vladimir Putin back in 1994, any thought that this introspective, uncommunicative person would be President of Russia in less than six years’ time was simply absurd. The occasion was the visit of Prince Charles to St Petersburg in May of that year, the first by a member of the Royal Family since the 1917 Bolshevik revolution.
DON’T BLINK, THE MIDDLE EAST IS CHANGING SO FAST
The long-running Israel-Palestinian question is central to the stability in the region. LONDON: A year ago, I announced something simple,” said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week. “We would change the face of the Middle East, and we are indeed doing so. Syria is not the same Syria. Lebanon is not the same Lebanon. Gaza is not the same Gaza.
RUSSIA, IRAN ARE BIG LOSERS IN SYRIA
With the loss of Syria, Russia’s carefully cultivated image as a great power and reliable backer is now severely damaged. LONDON: The speed of events was simply breath-taking. For more than 50 years the Assad dynasty ruthlessly ruled over Syria with the help of a formidable security apparatus and the use of brutal force. Then, in the blink of an eye it was gone, shattering its supposed impregnable hold over the country.
RUSSIA’S ECONOMY IS BOOMING, SO WHY IS IT IN TROUBLE?
Putin’s 25 years at the helm have been little different to the Soviet era. He has again made Russia a military giant but an economic dwarf. LONDON: Sanctions! What sanctions? You could almost hear the sneer coming from the Kremlin last Sunday as President Vladimir Putin signed off Russia’s new budget, which had been approved a few days earlier by lawmakers in both the State Duma and the Federation Council.

NORTH KOREA’S GIFT OF TROOPS TO MOSCOW MIGHT BACKFIRE
If the shells and other weapons do arrive, Ukraine will be more than compensated for North Korea’s entry into the war and Putin’s ruse may be seen to have backfired. LONDON: President Vladimir Putin is getting desperate. Since he ordered the full scale invasion of Ukraine more than two and a half years ago, a war he expected to win in just a few weeks and therefore a catastrophic misjudgement, Russian forces have suffered over 600,000 casualties, according to US intelligence sources.

As thunderstorms exploded across several parts of Australia this week, photographers jumped into action. Stunning storm photos emerged from parts of Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia, many with a distinct purple hue. Lightning can come in many different colours, including yellow, brown, pink and red, depending on environmental factors. But Bureau of Meterology senior forecaster Jessica Lingard said purple was the most common colour.

WILL ISRAELIS EVER LIVE IN PEACE?
London: Israel’s fight started at birth. The 1948 War of Independence lasted some 20 months and was the culmination of 30 years of friction between Jews and Arabs during the period of British rule of Palestine. Formed on the land of historic Palestine, Israel seems to have been at war ever since it was created in 1948.

First discovered in 2023, it has moved into the inner solar system and is visible from Earth.
Insurance claim data reveals men and over-65 drivers most likely to crash cars
When Jon Doust gets behind the wheel, he says he is keenly observant. At 76, he is among the oldest drivers on the road and he is also among the most likely to be involved in a crash. That is according to a study into a decade's worth of motor insurance claims that indicate men and drivers over 65 are most at risk of an accident. The Albany man often drives more than 800km return to Perth from the south coast. His message to others in his demographic is simple — share the driving.
Modelling the invasion, management strategies and economic impact of the invasive alien aquatic plant Egeria densa
Abstract Egeria densa is a south American aquatic plant considered as an invasive alien species with a very aggressive and expansionist behaviour out of its native ecosystems. The widespread decorative use of E. densa in aquariums, coupled with the potential for subsequent disposal malpractice, has resulted in its introduction into a range of vulnerable ecosystems across the globe. This work presents a dynamic model of a population of E.
