Hardware security verification must go beyond functional testing
Imagine you’re an attacker staring at a billion-transistor system-on-chip (SoC). You don’t care whether the design boots Linux, passes simulation, or meets its performance targets. Your objective is far simpler. Find the one flaw nobody thought to look for. It might be an undocumented debug port or path. Maybe it’s a configuration error between hardware and firmware.
Extension of Tian Shan along a nascent shear zone
Abstract Our understanding of the dynamics of mountain belt growth is hampered by the lack of high-resolution kinematic observations spanning entire orogenic belts. This is particularly the case for the structurally complex and nascent Tian Shan plateau. Here we use 8 years of Sentinel-1 data across 2 million square kilometres of the Tian Shan to show that the mountain range is extending along its strike, predominantly by rotating along a northeast-trending distributed shear zone.
Importance Of Hardware Security Verification In Pre-Silicon Design
Today’s semiconductor chips run cloud infrastructure, automotive controllers, industrial robots, and edge AI processors, so effectively the entire technology market. Engineers must now ensure that silicon itself defends against attacks, protects embedded secrets, and complies with increasingly stringent global security standards, such as ISO/SAE 21434 and the EU Cyber Resilience Act.

Narrowing the gap for city building height predictions - Scientific Reports
Abstract Understanding the 3D evolution of urban environments at high resolution through space and time is crucial for targeting sustainable development and enhancing resilience to hazards but usually requires expensive commercial satellite or aerial imagery. This leads to data scarcity and analytical biases in countries without access to these capabilities.
Urgent need for greater earthquake resilience in continental Asia - Nature Geoscience
Time and time again we see earthquakes strike densely populated areas (Fig. 1), a correlation that is not coincidental in continental Asia. Many population centres in this region owe their existence to the presence of active faults that shape the landscape and channel water, creating habitable areas in a region with harsh conditions2 that are likely to worsen with climate change.
Variability in interseismic strain accumulation rate and style along the Altyn Tagh Fault - Nature Communications
Abstract Major strike-slip faults that develop between strong and weaker regions are thought to focus along narrow shear zones at the rheological boundary. Here we present the InSAR-derived velocity field spanning almost the entire length of one such fault, the 1600 km-long Altyn Tagh Fault (ATF), and analyse the strain distribution.
"Variations In The Electrophoretic Mobility Of Purified Staphylocoagula" by John Elliott Hill
Abstract ABSTRACT Coagulase production was investigated for 23 strains of Staphylococcus aureus. The coagulase from seven of these strains was purified and subjected to electrophoresis. The dialyzable fraction of heart infusion broth was the growth medium. Coagulase was harvested from 5 hr shake cultures incubated at 37 c. A series of dialysis steps lasting 24 hr at a temperature of 2 C were used to purify the different coagulases.
The perils of JavaScript: How we've broken the internet's security
This article is a synopsis of John Elliott's keynote at RSA Conference 2023, "Regulation and Risk When Your Customer’s Browser Leaks Data." When I say that I'm worried we've broken the internet, people often think that I'm perhaps over-exaggerating or worse, a little unhinged. Let me assure you this is not the case. But I am concerned that we've broken some of the security of the internet. And if you can spare me a few minutes, I'll explain.
Carbon Quest’s new technology captures carbon emissions at Upper West Side building The Grand Tier - CBS News
NEW YORK – The Grand Tier is a 30-story apartment building on 64th Street and Broadway. They currently use a giant boiler powered by natural gas for heat and hot water, which results in emissions causing smog and pollution, and carbon dioxide. And it’s that CO2 that stays in the atmosphere, traps the earth’s heat, contributing to climate change.
Spark MLlib on AWS Glue
Machine Learning AWS pushes Sagemaker as its machine learning platform. However, Spark’s MLlib is a comprehensive library that runs distributed ML natively on AWS Glue — and provides a viable alternative to their primary ML platform. One of the big benefits of Sagemaker is that it easily supports experimentation via its Jupyter Notebooks. But operationalising your Sagemaker ML can be difficult, particularly if you need to include ETL processing at the start of your pipeline.

Exceptional capacitive deionization rate and capacity by block copolymer-based porous carbon fibers
Abstract Capacitive deionization (CDI) is energetically favorable for desalinating low-salinity water. The bottlenecks of current carbon-based CDI materials are their limited desalination capacities and time-consuming cycles, caused by insufficient ion-accessible surfaces and retarded electron/ion transport. Here, we demonstrate porous carbon fibers (PCFs) derived from microphase-separated poly(methyl methacrylate)-block-polyacrylonitrile (PMMA-b-PAN) as an effective CDI material.

Defending Against JavaScript Keylogger Attacks on Payment Card Information
In this course, Defending Against JavaScript Keylogger Attacks on Payment Card Information, John Elliott and Troy Hunt discuss the most common attack used to steal payment card data and how to defend against it. Learn how security people think about a problem, why criminals attack, how their tools and techniques work, and how you have to adapt as defenders.
Repairing “known-good” boards
Early in my career, I worked for a contract test house that built in-circuit test (ICT) sets for PCA (printed-circuit assembly) testing. We delivered a turn-key solution that included the test fixture and debugged programming that was ready for the production line. The customer would provide us with the details of the board design and three to five known-good boards, and we would design the bed of nails fixture and develop the software to work on the customer’s ICT system.

Craig & Company: Lighter Side of the News - 10/19
Every morning, Craig & Company bring you the Lighter Side of the News! Here are some of today’s highlights! Those coin-operated vacuum cleaners at the car wash… how much money in quarters do you think they produce? Police in Maryland believe this conman removed over $200,000 over three years and no one noticed. He used a specially built tool to open the machine. Hartford ranks #16 on a list of the most rat-infested cities in America. Most popular Halloween costumes this year?
Associations with resident physicians' early adoption of electronic cigarettes for smoking cessation
Background Use of the electronic cigarette for nicotine delivery has increased dramatically in recent years. Information continues to emerge on its role as a smoking cessation aid, but little is known about resident physician use of the device in clinical practice. Methods In 2015, an electronic survey was administered to resident physicians in one healthcare system in Columbus, Ohio.

The tectonics of the western Ordos Plateau, Ningxia, China: Slip rates on the Luoshan and East Helanshan Faults
Analysis of the locus, style, and rate of faulting is fundamental to understanding the kinematics of continental deformation. The Ordos Plateau lies to the northeast of Tibet, within the India-Eurasia collision zone. Previous studies have suggested that it behaves rigidly and rotates anticlockwise within a large-scale zone of ENE-WSW left-lateral shearing.
Sustainable Intensification: A Case for Innovation in Science and Policy
Several recent influential reports (for example, Royal Society, 2009; Foresight, 2011) have suggested that, in response to expected food shortages and ongoing environmental degradation, a policy of sustainable intensification of agriculture should be pursued. Such a policy would involve producing more food without expanding the area under cultivation and without adverse environmental impact.

Moving From Volume to Value
In 1978, REO Speedwagon released the single “Roll with the Changes,” a song that never fails to give me an adrenaline rush, especially as I run or bike. I think it’s pertinent to what healthcare professionals are experiencing since health reform became law in 2010 and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) began its reimbursement initiatives to transition from volume to value.
Earthquake Monitoring Gets Boost from New Satellite
On 24 August 2014, the San Francisco Bay area shook in an Mw = 6.0 earthquake, the region’s largest in 25 years. The tremors injured roughly 200 people, killed 1 person, and damaged buildings near the quake’s epicenter in the southern reaches of California’s Napa Valley. It also set off a scientific scramble to measure the fault’s movement and marked the dawn of a new age of earthquake satellite monitoring thanks to a recently launched spacecraft: the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-1A.
Mercury risk to avian piscivores across western United States and Canada
The widespread distribution of mercury (Hg) threatens wildlife health, particularly piscivorous birds. Western North America is a diverse region that provides critical habitat to many piscivorous bird species, and also has a well-documented history of mercury contamination from legacy mining and atmospheric deposition. The diversity of landscapes in the west limits the distribution of avian piscivore species, complicating broad comparisons across the region.
Paying the pipers: Mitigating the impact of anticoagulant rodenticides on predators and scavengers
Anticoagulant rodenticides, mainly second-generation forms, or SGARs, dominate the global market for rodent control. Introduced in the 1970s to counter genetic resistance in rodent populations to first-generation compounds such as warfarin, SGARs are extremely toxic and highly effective killers. However, their tendency to persist and accumulate in the body has led to the widespread contamination of terrestrial predators and scavengers.
Avian mercury exposure and toxicological risk across western North America: A synthesis
Methylmercury contamination of the environment is an important issue globally, and birds are useful bioindicators for mercury monitoring programs. The available data on mercury contamination of birds in western North America were synthesized. Original data from multiple databases were obtained and a literature review was conducted to obtain additional mercury concentrations.
