Connacht make it 93 points in two games to dispatch Zebre
CONNACHT SURPASSED THEIR haul of seven tries against Saracens last week but never reached the heights of that Champions Cup performance as they put URC basement side Zebre to the sword at Dexcom Stadium. Connacht ran in eight tries but coughed up five in the process in a mixed display to secure their second league win of the season.
'Tonight we said, 'Give the crowd a bit of energy, fire some shots, play Connacht rugby''
CIARÁN FRAWLEY SAYS it was brilliant to mark his first home match for Connacht with a win over former champions Saracens as Stuart Lancaster’s men got their campaign off to a flying start. Frawley, who scored two tries in a man-of-the-match display, said he got a taste of what the Connacht crowd can give their team when he played for Leinster at the opening of the revamped Dexcom Stadium back in January.
Frawley stars on home debut as Connacht beat Saracens in 13-try thriller
John Fallon reports from Dexcom Stadium CIARÁN FRAWLEY CROWNED his home debut with two tries in a man-of-the-match display as Connacht got their Champions Cup campaign off to a flying start in an astonishing clash at Dexcom Stadium which produced 13 tries. Seven of those were scored by Stuart Lancaster’s men as they returned to Europe’s top tier after a couple of seasons in the Challenge Cup, and they laid down a marker against the former champions.
Lancaster warns Connacht must sort out discipline
STUART Lancaster admitted they need to sort out their high penalty count as they head back into the Champions Cup, taking on Saracens at Dexcom Stadium on Saturday (5.30pm). Their superb late run last season, winning eight of their last night league games, secured a return to Europe’s premier competition.
Worker awarded €40k after being placed on leave for refusing to take drug test
A RESIDENTIAL CARE manager who was placed on indefinite unpaid leave after refusing his employer’s demands to undergo drug testing has been awarded €40,000 in compensation for constructive dismissal and unlawful wage deductions. The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) found that the care home operator had fundamentally breached the worker’s contract and acted without reasonable cause by forcing him out of work based on unfounded suspicions of illicit drug addiction.
Ireland's route to Brazil: How the Women's World Cup play-offs work
Eleven European nations are guaranteed to qualify for next year’s Women’s World Cup in Brazil, the tenth edition and last with 32 teams before an expansion to 48 from 2031. Only four teams sealed their direct route to the finals under Uefa’s format, they being the winners of the four League A mini-groups; Germany, Denmark, champions Spain and France, the team that topped Ireland’s pool. Of the remainder, 32 are funnelled into a convoluted play-off system, split into two phases.
Ireland's route to Brazil: How the Women's World Cup play-offs work
Tue, 13 Oct, 2026 - 03:15 Eleven European nations are guaranteed to qualify for next year’s Women’s World Cup in Brazil, the tenth edition and last with 32 teams before an expansion to 48 from 2031. Only four teams sealed their direct route to the finals under Uefa’s format, they being the winners of the four League A mini-groups; Germany, Denmark, champions Spain and France, the team that topped Ireland’s pool.
'I absolutely love playing here': Denise O'Sullivan relishing return to Páirc Uí Chaoimh
Denise O’Sullivan admits she’s relishing getting back out onto the Páirc Uí Chaoimh turf on Tuesday night after being rested, against her wishes, by Carla Ward. Ireland trounced Kazakhstan 8-0 in Friday’s first leg of the World Cup playoff semi-final in Astana, without both O’Sullivan and the suspended Katie McCabe. Ward confirmed that both of her star turns will be restored to the line-up as the Girls in Green look to put on a show ahead of the much sterner final against either Belgium or Poland.
Denise O’Sullivan and McCabe ready for Páirc return
Katie McCabe and Denise O’Sullivan will be unleashed at Pairc Uí Chaoimh on Tuesday night as Ireland intend showing no mercy to Kazakhstan in the women’s World Cup playoff semi-final. That arduous eleven-hour trip Ireland endured to Astana for Friday’s first leg will feel a lot harder for the visitors bruised by an 8-0 pasting. Ireland are already thinking of next month’s showdown against either Poland or Belgium for a place at the 2027 showpiece.
Lancaster says Connacht must address high penalty count after Glasgow mauling
STUART LANCASTER ADMITTED Connacht need to sort out their high penalty count if they are to reverse a poor start to the season. They left Glasgow empty-handed after a 33-19 loss on Friday night, having also failed to pick up a point at home to the Stormers, with only a late win over Benetton to show for their efforts so far. They have had major problems on maul defence which in turn has led to a high penalty count.
Ragged and ill-disciplined Connacht leave Glasgow beaten and bullied Original
By John Fallon AN ILL-DISCIPLINED performance saw Connacht leave Glasgow empty-handed as the superior home maul dominated this URC clash. It leaves Connacht heading into the Champions Cup against Saracens next weekend with a lot of room for improvement, not least up front where they again, for the third game running, had difficulties.
'His growth is incredible to see' - Lancaster hails Frawley's immediate impact at Connacht
CONNACHT HEAD COACH Stuart Lancaster has hailed the immediate impact of his summer marquee signing, Ciarán Frawley. The Irish international crowned a dream debut with two tries to get Connacht’s season up and running with a 22-19 win against Benetton in Treviso. Frawley, who got his first just before the break, struck for the winner three minutes from time after Connacht had somehow survived a second-half barrage from the Italians.
'I did wrestle with it a lot' - New Galway boss Éamonn Fitzmaurice on prospect of facing Kerry
ÉAMONN FITZMAURICE SAYS he had no intention of going back into inter-county management, least of all with another county, until a call came from Galway after Pádraic Joyce stepped down after seven years in charge. Fitzmaurice said there was something about the call from Galway GAA chairman Paul Bellew that turned his head and made the former Kerry All-Ireland winning player and manager, who will be 50 next year, realise this sort of opportunity might not come along again.
Frawley marks Connacht debut with two tries to seal road win for Connacht
John Fallon reports. CIARÁN FRAWLEY MARKED a glorious debut by scoring the winning try – his second of the night —three minutes from time at Stadio Monigo to get Connacht’s season up and running. Connacht had to saturate enormous pressure, not least in the scrum, but stayed in the game and snatched it at the death. Frawley crowned a fine opening half with the try which pushed them 17-12 in front at the break after a scrappy opening half.
'Gut-wrenching to concede the last try' - Lancaster laments defeat for Connacht
STUART LANCASTER SAID that Connacht’s failure to even get a bonus point was ‘sickening’ after a disappointing performance which saw them go down 29-15 to the Stormers, with the South Africans hitting two late tries in Galway. Last season Connacht picked up just 16 points in the first half of their URC campaign but then sneaked into the knockout places with a remarkable run which saw them collect 38 points out of a maximum 45 in their last nine games.
Connacht fall to powerful Stormers in flat URC opener
John Fallon reports from the Dexcom Stadium STUART LANCASTER’S HOPES of Connacht making a blistering start to the new season never got off the ground as they were made to pay for a lack-lustre display at Dexcom Stadium. Two late tries wrapped up a big win for the Cape Town side, but there was no disputing their dominance, not least up front where they went through the phases and eventually wore down the home cover on a night when Connacht were celebrating their 2016 PRO12 success.
Hopes are high as Connacht Rugby kick-off new URC campaign
Connacht kick off the new rugby season with a clash against the Stormers from Cape Town in the URC at Dexcom Stadium this Friday (7.45pm) with a crowd of around 8,000 expected at the College Road venue. Their first competitive week of the season kicked off with head coach Stuart Lancaster disclosing he is in talks to extend his contract; while newly-capped Irish international Seán Jansen has signed up for another two seasons.
US consortium remains keen on Cork City despite takeover rebuff
A US-based consortium insists it is determined to pursue a takeover bid for Cork City despite being so far rebuffed. The newly promoted club has been majority-owned by Dermot Usher since the start of 2023, with David Cronin acquiring a 20% stake in late 2024. Combined, their personal investment to date is understood to be around €4m.
Lancaster says no contact with Leinster, set to extend Connacht contract
STUART LANCASTER SAYS he is in talks with Connacht about extending his contract and that there has been no contact with Leinster about taking over there when Leo Cullen departs at the end of the season. Lancaster spent seven seasons as senior coach under Cullen and was identified in many quarters as a possible successor when the Leinster boss announced his intention to leave at the end of this campaign.
Stuart Lancaster not in talks with Leinster as he eyes Connacht extension
Updated / Monday, 21 Sep 2026 17:00 Stuart Lancaster spent seven seasons as senior coach under Leo Cullen at Leinster Stuart Lancaster said he is in talks with Connacht about extending his contract and that there has been no contact with Leinster about taking over there when Leo Cullen departs at the end of the season.
Jim Gavin out of running for Galway job as search for new boss continues
GALWAY HOPE TO have a new senior football manager in place early next month even though clubs in the county did not propose anyone for the position by Friday’s deadline for nominations. And it is believed that former Dublin manager Jim Gavin, strongly considered within the county for the position up to the weekend, is no longer a contender despite several conversations with officials and others in Galway.
How ready are Cork City for life in the Premier Division?
Winning the First Division for Cork City has become akin to Ireland lifting the Triple Crown; an achievement not worth dwelling on. Ireland’s largest county should have a constant presence in the Premier Division but a multitude of reasons are behind three relegations in five years. Ensuring there’s no repeat is the task facing the ownership, management and players during 2027. Planning for that mission has long been underway.
Alan Bennett Appointed Head of Academy Coachingat Cork City FC
Cork City FC have confirmed that Alan Bennett has been appointed as the club's Head of Academy Coaching. This new position is funded through the League of Ireland Academy Investment Programme supported by the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport and Sport Ireland. The role will see the former City captain working closely with Academy Director Colin O’Brien and all of the Academy’s coaching staff, aiding in the development of both coaches and players.
Shay Given: Another good Premier League season and Caoimhín Kelleher will attract top clubs
Ireland legend Shay Given expects Brentford to eventually lose fellow goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher to a tempting offer. The Corkman left Liverpool at the start of last season, since flourishing as a first-choice Premier League custodian under compatriot Keith Andrews. Given, who earned 134 caps during an Ireland career that included World Cup and Euro finals appearances, has watched his successor with admiration and isn’t the only one.
Mack Hansen leads the way in Connacht victory over Ealing
CONNACHT STEPPED UP their preparations for the new season with a decisive win over Ealing Trailfinders at Dexcom Stadium with Mack Hansen leading the way. Connacht, pipped in their other preseason game away to Vannes last weekend, were on top for most of the contest against the English Championship side which included former Munster centre Rory Scannell in their squad and which also has former Connacht back rower Conor Oliver on board for the season.
John Egan commits to Hull City for another two seasons - at least
John Egan could replicate Séamus Coleman’s longevity by remaining at Hull City until he’s 37 after agreeing a contract extension. The newly-promoted Tigers, who’ve beaten Manchester United and Coventry City in their opening pair of matches, have tied the Corkman down on for another two years, with the option of a further 12 months. The 33-year-old has been a dependable performer since signing from Burnley in February 2025, making 61 appearances in City colours.
Former Cork City Mark O'Mahony joins Burton Albion on loan
Corkman Mark O'Mahony has sealed his third loan move from Brighton and Hove Albion, joining League One outfit Burton Albion before last Tuesday's night’s deadline. The 21-year-old will be part of Gary Bowyer’s squad for the rest of the season, beginning with Wednesday's visit of Wimbledon to the Pirelli Stadium. The striker has made four appearances for Brighton since departing Cork City in 2023 but the majority of three years in England has been spent gaining experience on loan elsewhere.
Mack Hansen returns as Connacht pipped at the death
IRISH WINGER MACK Hansen made a successful return from injury for his first game since last December as Connacht were pipped at the death by Vannes in Brittany. The 28-year-old played 52 minutes of the preseason friendly while fellow Australian, centre Byron Ralston, returned for his first action since suffering a knee injury last October. Connacht’s first match of the new season was delayed by half an hour after their team bus was delayed in traffic due to an accident.
Cathal Heffernan moves to Cambridge United on four-year deal
Former Ringmahon Rangers player, Cathal Heffernan, has joined English League One side Cambridge United on a four-year contract. The centre-back only joined Harrogate Town six months ago from Newcastle United. He began his professional career at hometown club Cork City before making a much-publicised move to Italian giants AC Milan. “It was a no-brainer to me when I found out that Cambridge were interested,” he said after stepping up a tier, on the back of 24 appearances for Harrogate.
Cork City's teen defender Donal O'Connor joining Brentford's Irish legion for €170,000
Cork City defender Donal O’Connor will be joining the Irish legion at Brentford after the club managed by Keith Andrews brokered an upfront fee of €170,000 for the teen. The 18-year-old centre-back only made his first-team debut in May but commanding displays over his eight appearances attracted a flock of suitors. The Bees soon jumped to the front of the queue and the player is currently at the club undergoing his medical to finalise his move.
Cork native Saoirse Noonan completes move to Watford
Cork native Saoirse Noonan has been snapped up by newly-promoted Women’s Super League 2 club Watford following her exit from Celtic. Noonan has won 14 caps for Ireland, opening her scoring haul against Georgia in 2021 before providing the winner against Slovenia in last year’s World Cup qualifier at Páirc Uí Chaoimh. The 27-year-old recently left Scottish giants Celtic, where she scored 57 goals in 74 appearances, including five hat-tricks.
Ireland clinch ninth place at U20 World Championship with win over Italy
John Fallon reports from Georgia IRELAND CERTAINLY DIDN’T have it all their own way, but they were good value for their win which wrapped up ninth place at the U20 World Championship on a rainy night in Georgia. Andrew Browne’s men were again forced to dig deep in Kutaisi, but they came good to make it three wins on the spin after the disappointing opening losses to England and Argentina.
Shamrock Rovers take out Cork City after extra time in FAI Cup final rematch
Substitute John McGovern bagged a brace as holders Shamrock Rovers needed extra-time to see off First Division leaders Cork City at Tallaght. The scoreline will flatter Stephen Bradley’s side as two of the goals, through McGovern and youngster Max Kovalevskis, arrived in the final nine minutes as the quality of the Hoops bench created a chasm unseen during the regulation time. Ruairi Keating of Cork City celebrates after scoring.
Ireland U20s hang on to beat Fiji at Junior World Championships
THE IRISH U20s20s had to survive a hectic finish to prevent a shock first-ever loss to Fiji at the Junior World Championships. In the end Andrew Browne’s men did enough to claim their second win of the tournament and set up a clash with Italy next Saturday to see which side finishes ninth. But having defeated the Fijians by an average of 34 points in their three previous encounters, they had to dig deep in a game where five players were binned, two of them Irish.
Charlie Molony cleared to play for Ireland U20s against Fiji
THE IRELAND U20 side have received a boost as they prepare for their penultimate game at this year’s Junior World Championship with the red card picked up by winger Charlie Molony against the USA being rescinded and he is now clear to play against Fiji tomorrow. The former Blackrock College player, one of just four in the current Irish squad to have featured in the tournament last year, was harshly given a second yellow for an aerial contest in the 73-22 win over the USA.
Ireland U20s run 11 tries past USA to finish pool campaign on a high
IRELAND RAN IN 11 tries to finish their pool campaign at the Junior World Championship in Georgia on a high. Earlier defeats to England and Argentina mean they will now vie for a position in the 9-12th finishing segment in their remaining two games in the 16-team tournament. Ireland had the bonus point in the bag in 29 minutes and ran in three more tries before the interval to lead by 45-3 at the break.
Longitudinal multiomics profiling of extracorporeal cross-circulation with pig liver xenografts in human decedents
|
Abstract Extracorporeal liver cross-circulation (ELC) using gene-edited porcine liver xenografts offers a potential bridge therapy for liver failure. We previously performed five ELC procedures in four brain-dead human decedents, during which the recipients developed severe thrombocytopenia. The porcine liver xenografts maintained their parenchymal structure, with immune cell infiltration and detectable IgM deposition on endothelial cells.

Former Everton player and Limerick manager McDonald set to replace Meyler at Cork City
Cork City manager Barry Robson isn’t expecting any ‘imminent’ recruits but it’s understood former Everton defender Neil McDonald is close to joining as his assistant. McDonald is on the verge of a League of Ireland return, having managed Limerick in 2017, filling the vacancy left by David Meyler’s recent return to Hull City. Robson hasn’t previously worked with McDonald but the 60-year-old was assistant to Simon Grayson in his last club managerial stint at Hartlepool United.

Ireland U20s' semi-final hopes ended in heavy defeat to Pumas
IRELAND WILL MEET the USA next Tuesday in Georgia hoping to avoid going into the relegation play-offs at the Junior World Championship after they were blown away by Argentina in another frustrating outing for Andrew Browne’s men. Ireland ran in six tries but never looked like winning at the Avchala Stadium in Tbilisi as Argentina made it two wins from two with some superb running from deep and a clinical edge that Ireland lacked.

The decision, made by the club’s committee, was endorsed by the squad.

Frustration for Ireland with opening game defeat to England
IRELAND MADE A frustrating start to their Junior World Championship campaign in Georgia despite outscoring England by five tries to four but ultimately didn’t do enough with 59% possession against the wind in the second half. A couple of bonus points was scant consolation, and they now face an uphill battle to qualify for the semi-finals as only one team goes through from a pool where Argentina hammered the USA 78-14 in the opening game in Tbilisi.
Arsenal lead queue of admirers for Cork City's teen Cillian Murphy
Cork City’s Cillian Murphy is close to agreeing a cross-channel transfer, with Arsenal firmly in the mix to land the Ireland U21 midfielder.
