THE HIGH-SPEED TRAIN between Paris and Nice ground to a halt just outside Lyon earlier this week due to an electrical fault. With temperatures above 30 °C, air conditioning failed, and passengers quickly became overheated, forcing railway staff to open the doors and let them seek shelter in whatever shade they could find along the railway line. Police and firefighters distributed cold drinks and aid during the four-hour delay.

LET’S BE HONEST, nobody likes paying taxes, yet like them or not, they are the price we pay to live in a civilised society. Some products, like cigarettes, attract high taxes. Three-quarters of the cost of a packet of fags in Ireland is tax. The main purpose of high cigarette taxes isn’t to raise revenue, but rather, to dampen demand, and it has been hugely successful. In the last two decades, some 800,000 people have quit the habit, with Ireland’s smoking rate dropping from 27% to 18%.

Costa Rica gets back to nature after decades of deforestation

Our small boat motored almost silently along the river that ran in a serpentine path through the rich rainforest of the Tortuguero national park on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. Monkeys, sloths and a variety of exotic birds could be glimpsed overhead through the dappled light breaching the forest canopy, while caimans – similar to small alligators – eyed us warily from the water’s edge. Rounding a bend in the river, it suddenly seemed to straighten unnaturally.
