Opinion - When the penal system releases people without a plan, everyone pays
A conservative Republican former sheriff from Jacksonville and a progressive Democrat from Trenton don’t end up writing op-eds together by accident. We’re here because the same crisis keeps showing up in both of our districts, and because the scale of what is at stake has made waiting for someone else to act an option neither of us can afford. This isn’t a story about bipartisanship for its own sake.
Rep. Rutherford: The F-35 Lightning II is more than a plane
John Rutherford Guest columnist April 24, 2026, 5:02 a.m. ET Our Northeast Florida community is proud that the 125th Fighter Wing at Jacksonville Air National Guard Base hosts our nation’s battle-proven stealth fighter: the F-35 Lightning II. While we see these incredible fighter jets in our skies regularly, we may not fully appreciate just how vital this state-of-the-art aircraft is to our national security as well as our local and state economy.
Life Insurance Plummets Among Gen Z
Today's 25-year-olds are far less likely to have life insurance than the 25-year-olds from the late 20th century. In 1989, for example, 65% of adults aged 20 to 39 owned some form of life insurance; by 2025, that total dropped to as low as 36% of Gen Z members. Though part of a general trend toward less life insurance ownership today (Figure 1), the reasons behind the decline among younger consumers are distinct, according to LIMRA and Capgemini's recent World Life Insurance Report 2026.

Hedgelaying - VoegelinView
Instead of a fence, we laid a hedge: not shrubbery you’d find in magazines, but a breathing barrier of rods and pleachers brought together to keep the cows in. The old metal we piled by the road for scrap, our wages for the day in lengths of pipe and corrugated steel and gas and beer and butter sandwiches. The saplings left alone for years now were disturbed, skinny trunks sawn nearly through, and bent to the mound so the sapwood grows around the wound.
Cole, Rutherford, Alford: U.S. Must Remain in Lockstep with Israel and Regional Allies Against Evil
Washington, D.C. – This new year beginning alongside the end of Hanukkah reminds us of the profound significance of light overcoming darkness. As Israeli and American hostages remain held by terrorists, we recognize the continued fight against the axis of evil that threatens the security of both our nations. In the face of ongoing threats, Chairman Tom Cole (R-OK), Rep. John Rutherford (R-FL), and Rep.

Safe Tech, Healthy Life
We all know that an unhealthy or unsafe environment can affect our well-being. But what if that goes for the security of your technology too? For business owners like me at Emergentz Technologies, we manage external threats with things like security systems and door locks. But the one thing that isn’t always a priority is what we let into our business or home through that always-open window called a computer. Computers and the internet are everywhere at home and at work.

Guest Editorial Week of 9/14/20
Observing the mile markers on the road to tyranny You can map the nearly 20-year journey from the 9/11 attacks to the COVID-19 pandemic by the freedoms we’ve lost along the way. The road we have been traveling has been littered with the wreckage of our once-vaunted liberties, especially those enshrined in the Fourth Amendment.

Reflections on Randomized Trials and Observational Studies
Dr Rutherford asks: How did your career in epidemiological science and health statistics begin? Sir Rory replies: When I was about to finish high school, I sought advice about studying mathematics at university from the careers advisor who suggested that it might lead to becoming an actuary. That did not sound at all interesting! I had a friend who was planning to get a medical degree, and, somewhat casually, I decided to follow in that direction instead.

We can still save the North Atlantic right whale - CommonWealth Magazine
NOW MAY BE our last chance to save the North Atlantic right whale from extinction. The North Atlantic right whale population once dominated the Atlantic Ocean with numbers likely in the tens of thousands, but today, only about 400 remain. In the 1700s, whalers prized these marine mammals for their fatty blubber, making them the “right whale” to harvest for oil and baleen. By the time whaling was outlawed in 1935, the species was decimated.

We are veterans. We believe Karl Dean will make our lives better. | Opinion
Imagine giving everything for your country — your sweat, your family life, your relationships, even your blood — and then coming home to find your country won’t give nearly enough for you. Each of us has seen it happen. Some of the men and women we served with, from Vietnam to Iraq, Afghanistan and beyond, have not been served well by the federal government — or even our state and local governments.

Citations for longanimity If your beauteousness scorns me, if your worth does not favour me, if your disdain is my humiliation, I shall ill be able, albeit I am well furnished with longanimity, to suffer a grief that is not merely intense but protracted. Miguel de Cervantes, Don Quixote, translated by John Rutherford, 2000 Annunziata's eyes clouded. A kind of scorn, a kind of pity, and a kind of patient longanimity looked from them.
