Why Costa Mesa voters won’t see any argument against business tax increase

Voters deserve fairness. But they’re not going to get it on the Nov. 3 election in Costa Mesa with Measure C, which calls for an increase to the city’s business license tax. Put on the ballot by the City Council on July 22, the tax hike isn’t even mentioned in the official title: “The Costa Mesa Fair Business License Reform, Small Business Protection Measure.” It’s really a large business tax increase. But making matters worse is the fact that voters will not even see an argument against Measure C.

Opinion: Oceanside’s ballot has both a tax hike and a gift to unions

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... Oceanside residents could get hit with a double whammy of more government from two measures on the Nov. 3 ballot. Measure letters will be assigned by the San Diego County Registrar of Voters on Aug. 10. Until then, let’s call the first the tax increase measure. It’s a half-cent sales tax, which I covered in my July 24 column, “Oceanside’s problem is spending, not revenue.” And let’s call the second the PLA measure.

Austin’s housing solutions offer a model for California cities

As LAist’s David Wagner reported, only about 16% of Orange County households earn the $350,400 needed to afford the county’s median home price of $1,442,930, according to the California Association of Realtors. That’s all despite Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office boasting on July 13 about his record of “hundreds of pieces of legislation signed since 2019, and groundbreaking CEQA reform enacted last year.” CEQA is the California Environmental Quality Act. Is there a better way? A way that works?
