Here, using a global dataset of 1249 squamates, we evaluate whether and how six key eco-environmental variables and their interactions shaped the evolutionary history of their coloration.

As vision evolved, so did earthly animals and plants. First came colorful fruit. Later came flowers, whose vivid colors attracted pollinators. As time passed, Earth and its creatures evolved together so that now we live in a colorful world.
