What to Know When Traveling With HIV
If you’re HIV-positive and planning to travel outside the U.S., you may face health risks you don’t have at home. Here’s what you need to know to help you stay safe while abroad. All international travelers need to be aware of health risks in the areas they’re visiting. If you have HIV, this is especially important. That’s because a weakened immune system can increase your risk for opportunistic infections. These illnesses are more common and can be more severe if you have HIV.
What to Know About Candidiasis When You Have HIV
If you have HIV, treatment called antiretroviral therapy (ART) can help you live a long, healthy life. But it’s a good idea to be aware of some of the health risks you might face, including fungal infections like candidiasis. This infection usually affects the mouth, throat, esophagus, or vagina. When it shows up in your mouth or throat, doctors call it thrush.
Your Guide to Descovy for HIV: What You Need to Know
You may have heard about Descovy (des-ko'-vee), a medicine approved by the FDA in 2015. Descovy is approved to treat HIV. It can also help prevent people from getting HIV through sex. People with HIV have a virus that spreads in their body and damages the immune system, making it easier for them to get very sick from other infections. The two medicines contained in Descovy (emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide) work together with other medicines to stop the spread of HIV in your body.
Self-Care Guide for People With HIV
Along with taking your HIV medication, self-care helps you stay healthy, have a better quality of life, and live longer with HIV. Self-care means you take good care of yourself with these healthy steps: Eat nutritious foods and stay at a healthy weight. Get regular physical activity. Manage stress and mental health. Keep up with medical care. Quit unhealthy habits such as smoking and heavy drinking. Here are some reasons: HIV weakens your immune system. You pick up infections more easily.
What Are NNRTIs for HIV?
If you’re living with HIV, there are now nine types of antiretroviral therapy (ART) that your doctor may prescribe. Among the most common are those called non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors, also known as NNRTIs. While this sounds like a complicated name, the way these drugs treat HIV is simple to break down. An NNRTI gets in the way of the virus’s ability to reproduce and affect new cells. You might also hear these drugs called non-nucleoside analogs or non-nukes.
How Much Does Truvada for PrEP Cost?
Truvada is a type of drug that helps reduce the risk of HIV infection, which is called pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). It blocks an enzyme that the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) needs to copy itself inside your body. When you take Truvada every day, it can lessen the chance that you’ll get HIV from sex by about 99%, and from injecting drugs by about 74%. The one downside to Truvada is that it's very expensive for people who don't have health insurance.
How Long Can HIV Live Outside the Body?
HIV, or the human immunodeficiency virus, attacks the cells that help you fight infection. It passes from person to person through bodily fluids like blood, semen, and breast milk. Here’s what happens when it gets outside the body.
HIV/AIDS in Hispanic and Latino Populations
The incidence of new human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) diagnoses in the United States has declined more than two-thirds since the height of the pandemic in the 1980s. While it’s true that HIV/AIDS doesn’t discriminate, race does play a role in infection rates, and Hispanic/Latino communities face high risks. In the United States, Hispanic/Latino people make up 19% of the population but account for 33% of new HIV infections.
HIV PEP After Rape and Sexual Assault
Rape and sexual assault affect over 450,000 Americans each year. And younger people, especially between the ages of 12-34, are at the highest risk for sexual violence. Besides the physical and emotional trauma, you may also be at risk for sexually transmitted infections such as HIV. If you suspect HIV exposure, see a doctor or get medical attention right away if you can. To lower your risk of infection, ask your doctor if post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is an option for you.
HIV in Rural Areas
Cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are typically concentrated in major cities, but health experts have seen more new diagnoses in rural areas. The HIV rates in these communities are catching up to urban areas for many reasons, including lack of access to proper health care and certain kinds of drug use.
HIV in Women Who Have Sex With Women
Even though gay men are often seen as the public face of HIV, it’s possible for a woman to spread HIV to another woman during sex. It is considered rare, but one of the earliest confirmed cases of female-to-female infection was reported in 2012 in Houston. Since then, it’s estimated that women account for roughly 18% of the 1.2 million Americans living with HIV. Women get HIV from having sex with men, through IV drug use, and other causes. But you can also get it through sex with women.
HIV and Diabetes
People living with HIV are more likely to get diabetes than people without it. One study showed that diabetes was up to four times more common in people with HIV. Diabetes is a common health problem. Many things make you more likely to get it, including having diabetes in your family, being overweight, and being older. But some people with HIV get diabetes at younger ages and without being overweight.
Identifying maximal beta power from directional subthalamic local field potentials in Parkinson’s disease
Abstract Accurate subthalamic beta activity could guide deep brain stimulation programming in Parkinson’s disease, but bipolar recordings complicate contact selection. In 39 patients, we validated three methods to estimate pseudo-monopolar beta power. Distance-weighted methods (Euclidean, Strelow) agreed consistently with the externalized “ground-truth” beta distribution. Maximal beta power across 20s windows was more stable in ring than in directional channels.
HIV and Cervical Cancer: What's the Link?
Women with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are six times more likely to develop cervical cancer than women without HIV. In fact, HIV is responsible for around 5% of all cervical cancer cases worldwide. It’s also the leading cause of death among women living with HIV. So, what’s the link? Here’s a look at what science says. If you have HIV, you are more likely to have a human papillomavirus (HPV) infection; it’s caused by the virus that is commonly associated with cervical cancer.
HIV Drug Assistance Programs
More than 1.2 million people in the U.S. are living with HIV. If left untreated, HIV can lead to AIDS. But with consistent medical treatment, HIV drugs can keep you healthy, and, if your HIV virus becomes undetectable in blood tests, the risk of sexual transmission is effectively zero. Antiretroviral therapy, or ART, is the best treatment for HIV, along with regular visits to your doctor or clinic to monitor your health. ART extends your life span and helps stop the spread of disease.
Cryptosporidium Infection (Cryptosporidiosis)
Cryptosporidium is a tiny one-celled parasite that can make you sick. When you have a cryptosporidium infection, your doctor might call it cryptosporidiosis. Both the germ and the illness are also called crypto. It can happen in people who have advanced HIV, or AIDS. It’s different from cryptococcal meningitis, a fungal infection that people with AIDS can get, which may also be called crypto. Some people who get crypto don’t have symptoms.
Selinexor Combo Improves Spleen Volume Reduction in Myelofibrosis
The frontline combination of selinexor (Xpovio) and ruxolitinib (Jakafi) showed a statistically significant improvement in spleen volume reduction of 35% or more (SVR35) vs ruxolitinib/placebo among those with myelofibrosis, according to a press release on data from the phase 3 SENTRY trial (NCT04562389).1 At week 24, the rate of SVR35 was 50% with the selinexor regimen vs 28% with ruxolitinib alone (P <.0001). Rapid spleen reduction at week 12 was reported in 49% vs 20% of patients in each arm.
Can Anti-Inflammatory Pathway-Targeting Treatment Work in Early Onset CRC?
Research into the distinct pathophysiological drivers of early-onset colorectal cancer (CRC) is a focus of investigation at Columbia University, according to Yoanna S. Pumpalova, MD. Standard genomic analyses have largely demonstrated that the somatic mutation profiles of early onset CRC tumors are genetically similar to those observed in average-onset colorectal cancers, but clinical presentations reveal some differences.

‘Unlawful Entry’ review by Eric_Mulder • Letterboxd
Unlawful Entry ★★★ Liked Spiritual prequel to Breakdown. The latter of which I watched a lot on VHS in the nineties. Funny thing is I didn’t know there was a whole sub genre of films where Kurt Russell gets gaslit. I’ll have to go through his filmography and look for more.

We've ridden past the homes of US presidents and through Civil War battlefields, over the Shenandoah Mountains, and around the Finger Lakes in Upstate New York. It is an enjoyable weekend with friends on a bike - what could be better?

What Is an Example of a Retrovirus?
A retrovirus is a virus that works by converting its own RNA into DNA once it is in a host cell. It then integrates this DNA into the DNA of the host cell, allowing the virus to replicate. Three retroviruses can cause illness in humans, and each one has different symptoms. One of these retroviruses is Human Immunodeficiency Virus, or HIV.

Conditions That Look Like HIV but Are Not
More than 1 million people in the United States live with HIV. About 1 in 7 of those million have no idea that they have this virus. One reason is that early symptoms of HIV, such as a fever, tiredness, and rash, are like symptoms of many other common infections, including the flu. Here’s what you should know about other conditions that may look like HIV at various stages. It’s important to know that having a couple of symptoms that look like HIV doesn’t guarantee you have it.
What Is HIV Status Discrimination?
HIV status discrimination is when people living with HIV and AIDS face negative attitudes, abuse, and discrimination. Although HIV status stigma can look different, examples include: Believing people deserve to get HIV because of the way they live their life Judging people who do things to prevent the spread of HIV Thinking that only certain groups can get HIV There was a lot of fear and anxiety when HIV became an epidemic in the 1980s.
HIV: What to Know About Needle Sharing
Sharing needles with other people has risks. When you use someone else’s needle to inject drugs, steroids, or other substances, you come in contact with their blood. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes AIDS, passes from one person to another through blood and other bodily fluids. Needle sharing is the second biggest risk for HIV, after anal sex. About 1 in 10 new HIV infections happen in people who inject drugs.
HIV and Lifestyle Changes
You can live a normal life with HIV. With your doctor’s help and advice, you can take steps to stay as healthy as possible. Here are some of the things you can do. Everyone with HIV should be on anti-retroviral therapy, or ART. These medicines reduce the amount of HIV in your blood. When your viral load is low, you’re less likely to get infections. ART also lowers the odds you’ll pass HIV to someone else. You’ll need to start ART right away. That’s usually as soon as you get an HIV diagnosis.
What Are Your Chances of Getting HIV?
The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) can affect anyone, no matter your age, race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation. But certain things make your risk go up. You can get HIV if the blood, semen, vaginal or rectal fluid, or breast milk of someone with HIV gets into your body. You put yourself at the highest risk of this when you: Have unprotected sex with an HIV-positive person. Share a needle with someone with HIV.
First Steps if You Think You've Been Exposed to HIV
You can get HIV from unprotected sex, an accidental needle stick, or using a dirty needle to inject drugs. If that happened to you, there’s a chance that you’ve been exposed to the virus that causes AIDS. Exposure doesn’t automatically mean infection. But you should act quickly to lower your chances of getting HIV. Here are your first steps: You should first be tested for HIV to confirm that you were HIV-negative before exposure. If so, you'll need to start PEP immediately.
Don't Wait for HIV Symptoms
You can have HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, and not know it. You also can have been exposed to HIV but not necessarily be infected. About 1 in 7 people who are HIV-positive are unaware of it. The only way to know if you are infected is to get an HIV test. HIV doesn’t affect everyone the same way. Some people notice signs soon after they get the virus. Others don’t. If the virus is in your body, here’s a timeline of what to expect: Immediately.
HIV: Tips for Taking Your Meds
You need to take your HIV medications every single day, on schedule, to keep your viral load low. That keeps you from getting sick and helps prevent the virus from spreading to others. When you take your medicine correctly, you also help ensure that your drugs will continue to work to control your HIV. If you don’t take your medications exactly as directed, not only can your viral load increase, but your body can also become resistant to these medicines. That means they stop working.
HIV and Depression
Depression is one of the most common mental illnesses in the U.S. -- especially among HIV-positive people. If you are living with HIV, you are three times more likely to face depression than those who are HIV negative. There are lots of reasons for this. Stress and stigma from HIV, medication side effects, and the disease itself can all affect your brain and body. If you are depressed, tell your doctor. Treatment can ease your symptoms. Make sure you take your HIV medicine every day.
HIV: What to Know About Taking Vitamins and Supplements
Your body needs vitamins and other essential nutrients in order to work properly. Eating a variety of foods can help you get the nutrients you need. This also has the added benefit of adding fiber and antioxidants to your diet. People with HIV need to be cautious when using supplements to help obtain some of these vitamins because too much of almost anything can be dangerous. Here’s what you need to know.
