On the relationship between language dominance and fluency in bilingual speakers of Low and High German
Aims and objectives: Bilingual speakers are rarely equally proficient in both languages, making the determination of language dominance a major challenge. For a regional language like Low German, an additional challenge is the absence of a standard variety as a reference. To assess language dominance in both standardized and non-standardized languages, examining oral fluency provides a promising, non-invasive source of information.

What Happens When 300 Applied Geometers Meet in Italy?
The 2023 SIAM Conference on Computational Geometric Design (GD23) took place in July and was paired with the International Geometry Summit 2023 (IGS’23) in Genova, Italy — bringing together more than 300 researchers in applied geometry, geometric modeling and processing, solid and physical modeling, computational geometric design, and shape modeling and analysis.
[2304.12393] Polyhedral Splines for Analysis
Generalizing tensor-product splines to smooth functions whose control nets outline topological polyhedra, bi-cubic polyhedral splines form a piecewise polynomial, first-order differentiable space that associates one function with each vertex. Admissible polyhedral control nets consist of grid-, star-, n-gon-, polar- and three types of T-junction configurations.
Grid or solar: Looking for the best energy solution for the rural poor
By Jörg Peters South Asia has made tremendous progress in connecting rural areas to the electricity grid but the number of people in Africa without access has scarcely changed since 2010. More than half a billion people in Africa don’t have access to electricity, meaning the continent hosts 72 percent of the world’s non-electrified population. The UN Sustainable Development Goals have set a universal goal of ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all by 2030.

Klimaschutz: Keine Moralpredigt, bitte!

How solar kits and battery lamps are replacing kerosene across Africa
For decades, people in rural Africa have been using sooty kerosene lamps to dimly light their homes. But in recent years households, even in poor areas, have started to replace their kerosene lamps with non-rechargeable dry-cell battery driven lamps and solar kits. This is happening largely without any governmental or donor involvement. These devices are equipped with light-emitting diodes (LED) that have become significantly cheaper over the years.
Rwanda: How Electricity Changes Lives - Case Study
analysis By Jörg PetersMore than 1.1 billion people in developing countries lack access to electricity. Some 590 million live in Africa, where the rural electrification rate is particularly low at only 14%. A lack of access to electricity hampers development. It affects everything from people's ability to learn to the creation of enterprises and the provision of public services like health care. This lies behind the United Nation's goal of countries achieving universal access to electricity by 2030.

A lack of access to electricity hampers development. It affects everything from people's ability to learn to the creation of enterprises and the provision of public services like health care. This lies behind the United Nation's goal of countries achieving universal access to electricity by 2030. But the investment requirements to meet this goal are enormous. According to the International Energy Agency investments worth $640 billion will be needed if the UN goal is going to be met.
