Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
I coerced the Rome-News Tribune into letting me write opinionated Braves columns.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes. (Were were poor growing up... I was probably the last kid with a typewriter in the 90's.)
How is social media changing news?
Instantaneous. Almost too fast... instead of letting facts marinate, we tweet them immediately. Good but dangerous.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Jeff Schultz
What does it mean to be a journalist?
I wish it meant to be the best at delivering an interesting story, but I'm afraid all it means now is how fast you can tweet.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Anytime other than Monday mornings.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
WordPress, Hootsuite, lots of coffee
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter
Who do you wish followed you?
Bob Costas
Why did you become a journalist?
I thought most baseball articles that I read were boring, and I thought I could do better.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I'm probably most proud of my Fred McGriff Hall of Fame case that I did for Tomahawk Take and Fox Sports.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Write what you want with reckless abandonment. If you believe it to be true, write it and stick to your guns. And don't read the comments.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Around 9 am.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
"Josh - Write a column about how Fred McGriff should be in the Hall of Fame."
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
It was a pitch to write about a trade the Braves had made between the Dodgers involved 5 players and the pitch was more than 200 words.
What's your favorite drink?
A tripe-shot cappuccino
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Walking my hound dog, Hank.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
The Drake (its a fly fishing magazine... I don't even fly fish that much, but the stories in there are great.)
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That I hate Jason Heyward. I don't hate Jason Heyward. I just don't think he's a great baseball player.
