I grew up on a farm just outside Portland, Oregon, where, from a young age, I pedaled down a country road to get my family's Oregonian each day. Newspapering is in my blood.

I attended Saint Mary's College of California, where I was editor-in-chief of the campus' weekly paper, The Collegian.

After moving to Puget Sound and cutting my teeth at the weekly North Kitsap Herald in Poulsbo, Wash., I got a job in nearby Bremerton as the crime and justice reporter at the daily Kitsap Sun. I've been h…

What was your first job as a journalist?

Paid: Education reporter, North Kitsap Herald, Poulsbo, Wash. Unpaid: The Farley Times, which I wrote as a boy. Subscribers: My parents.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

In school. I miss how palpable it felt to hit the keys and feel the ink punch the paper.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Clark Kent. Sorry, but it's hard to beat a journalist by day, super hero by night.
