China’s regulatory innovation for new biomedical technologies
CORRESPONDENCE 01 September 2026 In July, an investigation reported that a six-year-old girl died last year after receiving an experimental brain-directed gene-editing therapy for a rare disorder in Shanghai, China (B. Borrell Science 393, 346–353; 2026). The case pre-dates China’s State Council Order No. 818, a new biomedical technologies framework that came into effect on 1 May. However, the case still highlights the challenges of biomedical regulation.

A stronger work ethic cannot fix advanced economies
By Jun Du German Chancellor Friedrich Merz returned from his recent visit to China visibly rattled. After touring Unitree Robotics in Hangzhou, where quadruped robots performed martial arts, he conceded that Germany is “simply no longer productive enough,” and warned that prosperity cannot be maintained with “work-life balance and a four-day week.” Germans, he declared, “will simply have to do a little more.” Merz is right to sound the alarm.

Anapole-state-enhanced 2D chiral photodetector operating in the near-infrared second window - Nature Communications
Abstract Two-dimensional (2D) materials hold promise for miniaturized photodetectors. With ample exciton resonances, the photodetection range of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) can be further extended to long wavelengths on a large scale by two-photon absorption (TPA), breaking the limit of their bandgaps. However, the conversion efficiency of TPA usually remains low despite resonant nonlinear optical effects.

Europe has five options for responding to Trump’s Greenland threats. None of them look good
European negotiators believed they had bought stability in July 2025 amid the global trade turmoil sparked by Donald Trump’s liberation day tariffs. The EU’s deal with the US involved eliminating tariffs on American goods, purchasing US energy and committing to American investment. But six months later, as the US president made his intentions regarding Greenland clear, it collapsed. Trump has now threatened new tariffs on eight European countries, the UK among them.

Quantum dots enabling all-in-one controllable polymerization through triplet energy transfer - Nature Communications
Abstract Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) have recently emerged as a class of initiators or activators for photopolymerization, typically relying on photoinduced charge transfer from QDs to co-additives. Here we report efficient photopolymerization of acrylates using QDs alone without any co-additives, triggered by energy transfer from photoexcited QDs to the triplet excited-states of acrylates on sub-nanosecond timescales.
The Impact of Staff and Manager Training on Firm Productivity: Differential and Interaction Effects
1 Introduction In debates about the causes of the long-term productivity slowdown across developed economies, skills are frequently discussed. Within a business organization, enhancing skills of employees has an important bearing on firm performance (Blume et al. 2010; Sitzman and Weinhardt 2019; Unwin 2017) because managerial skills often define ‘what’ the organization aspires to achieve, whereas staff skills may place a ceiling on ‘how much’ that aspiration can be achieved.
