Your browser does not support the audio element. Until recently there were two Kara Gouchers — the fit, powerful one the world saw, the first woman runner to join Nike’s prestigious Oregon Project, coached by the storied Alberto Salazar. She was the young runner who burned up the college circuit, whose 2008 New York Marathon finish put an American woman on the podium for the first time in nearly 15 years, a silver medalist at the Osaka World Championships and more.

Kara Goucher and Lauren Fleshman reveal what's wrong with women's running
The first time Lauren Fleshman crossed my field of vision was in 2010, when I happened to be watching the U.S. Women's Track and Field 5K Championships. The race started in ordinary fashion; then, suddenly, Fleshman bolted from the pack, unleashing a ferocious kick as though the finish line were just in sight. In reality, the finish was still many hundreds of meters away. Had she made a mistake? What was going on? She sped on heedlessly, ponytail swaying as she broke the tape.

Ali Jawad, 3-Time Paralympian in Powerlifting on Apple Podcasts
54 min We dare you to tell Ali Jawad that he can't do something. He will probably prove you wrong just as he's been doing his entire life. Ali was born without legs, but he has never viewed that as a disadvantage. At age 7, he dreamed of being on an Olympic podium after watching Michael Johnson win double golds in the 200m and 400m in Atlanta. He finally made that dream come true by winning a silver medal in Rio in 2016 in his third Paralympic Games. The journey to that podium was not an easy one.
Matt Taylor, Co-Founder and CEO of Tracksmith on Apple Podcasts
54 min Matt Taylor grew up in the industrial city of Pittsburgh, PA with a family history in the steel and coal industries. As that city (and its industries evolved), his father lost his job with a steel company. His dad's career struggles and then watching his mom start a store of her own planted a seed for Matt that he wanted to eventually pursue entrepreneurship as well.

By Eric ChristensenMarch 25, 2020 at 12:00 pm BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4)– Boulder’s Kara Goucher received a rare package on Friday. A well-deserved but long overdue silver medal. “Some people have said it’s taken way too long and I agree,” said Goucher. “But I really do appreciate that it finally came and I rightfully have the medal I earned.” Kara Goucher (credit: CBS) The story begins back in 2007 when Goucher shocked the track and field world.
Jared Ward, Olympian and 2:09 Marathoner on Apple Podcasts
1 hr 4 min Jared Ward is an Olympian and 2:09 marathoner, but he might be more proud of his role as a father to 4, professor at BYU, virtual running coach, or ambassador to a Shark-Tank-featured company (MyoStorm). He is fast on the roads but "juggles" it all well off the race course as well. In this interview, Kara and Chris dig in with Jared on his early running days and his patient progression from 21 minute 5K runner in early high school to finishing 6th at the Olympic Marathon in Rio.
Stephanie Bruce, 2:29 Marathoner and US 10K Road Champion on Apple Podcasts
56 min In this episode, we stay with team NAZ Elite and interview Stephanie (Steph) Bruce. Not all superheroes wear capes and Steph Bruce is an example of that. You already know that she is fast (at both the marathon and 10K distances), but did you know that she's also a running coach, co-founder of Picky Bars, mom of two, and of course, advocate for women in sport and clean sport. In this interview, Shanna and Chris interview Steph, and we cover a wide range of topics.
Emily Sisson, 2:23 Marathoner (Fastest US Debut) on Apple Podcasts
57 min In this episode, Kara and Chris interview Emily Sisson as we continue our series in the build-up to the Olympic Marathon Trials in Atlanta on February 29th. Emily has had success at every level from high school state champion to 2-time NCAA champion and now 2-time US Champion on the roads in the 5K and 10K. Perhaps more impressive, however, was her first marathon last spring in London where she ran 2:23 to clock the fastest debut ever by an American on a record-eligible course.
Desiree Linden, Boston Marathon Champion on Apple Podcasts
1 hr 5 min We continue a new year of Clean Sport podcasts with another amazing guest as 2018 Boston Marathon Champion Desiree Linden joins Kara and Chris on the show. You know Des as a two-time Olympian in the marathon with 3 podium finishes in World Marathon Majors including two second place finishes at Boston and Chicago, and then of course her epic win in Boston in 2018 in nor'easter conditions. But, do you know how she started in sport?
Steve Magness, Nike Oregon Project Whistleblower on Apple Podcasts
1 hr 3 min We are excited to kick off a new decade of fighting for clean sport with this powerful episode. Some use the word whistleblower, but we prefer to use the word truth-teller to describe our next guest - Steve Magness. Steve was a precocious talent as a runner in high school and college with a 4:01 personal best in the mile.
“From Avocation To Vocation: How I Turned My Hobby Into A Career” With Fitness Coach Julia Hickman
As a part of our series about entrepreneurs who transformed something they did for fun into a full-time career, I had the pleasure of interviewing…Julia Hickman, a wife, mom and lifestyle and online fitness coach helping time-crunched women avoid the overwhelm of maintaining a fit and healthy lifestyle by providing quick and effective workouts and simple recipes in a private Facebook community. She calls them her Fastinista FitSquad.
Roger Pielke, Expert in Sports Governance on Apple Podcasts
55 min Roger Pielke is a name you need to know. He has a Ph.D in Political Science and is a professor at the University of Colorado in Boulder. At CU, he is the director of the Sports Governance Center within the Department of Athletics at the Center for Science and Technology Policy Research. That might all sound boring to you, but Roger's curiosity at the intersection of science, policy, sport has led him to be a critical player on topics that matter within sports governance.
Mary Cain Tells Us Her Story on Apple Podcasts
49 min In 2012, Mary Cain set the US High School record in the 1500m at the World Junior Championships running 4:11. Later that year, she got a call from Alberto Salazar who invited her to come train with the Nike Oregon Project (NOP). She was 16 years old.
It Will Take Female Coaches to Protect the Next Mary Cain
Track and field’s toxic male-dominated culture not only abuses women, it denies them allies Mary Cain. Photo: Christian Petersen/Getty Images Last week, former high school track phenom Mary Cain published a New York Times op-ed about what she said was abuse at the hands of “the world’s most famous track coach,” Alberto Salazar, at the Nike Oregon Project when she was just out of high school.

54 min In this episode, we bring you part one of a two-part interview with US marathon legend Frank Shorter. Frank Shorter is the only American to win two Olympic medals for the marathon distance earning gold in 1972 in Munich and silver in 1976 in Montreal. Sadly, in 1976 he was robbed of a second gold medal moment when he was beaten by East German runner Waldemar Cierpinski who would later be directly linked to a state-sponsored doping program.

Goucher and Radcliffe Build Friendship on Running
In January, when the elite marathoner Kara Goucher found out she was pregnant, she knew exactly whom to ask for advice. Paula Radcliffe, the women’s world-record holder and mother of a 3-year-old daughter, had just arrived in Portland, Ore., to train with her. The topic of pregnancy became more personal for Radcliffe a few days later when she, too, learned she was expecting. She and Goucher are due to give birth on the same date in late September.
Me and Running? We're in it For the Long Haul
I love running. This love affair began decades ago. The first time my grandfather took me to run I was 6 years old. I thought it was so great. Later, I joined organized running when I was 12. I was hooked. And although the expectations surrounding running and performance created anxiety in my life, my love for running itself never waned. I used to compete at the highest level of the sport. I won a silver medal at the world championships. I made two Olympic teams.

Kara Goucher: Finding My Way Back Home
By Kara Goucher If someone had told me five years ago that I’d run a half marathon and finish fifth in 75:12—which would be the slowest time of my professional running career—and that it would be one of the most meaningful experiences of my running career, I would have laughed and told them, “No way possible.” But that’s exactly what I did on June 17 at the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon in my hometown of Duluth, Minn. Somehow, I’ve finally gotten back to what makes me happy.
Kara Goucher's Guide to Boston | Oiselle Running and Athletic Apparel for Women
Running the Boston Marathon has been an unbelievable experience for me. In 2009 I went to Boston with the dream of ending the drought of American victors. Although I fell 9 seconds short of that goal, it was an experience I will never forget. I headed back in 2011 with my 6 month old son, and Boston awarded me with a PR of 2:24:53. I returned again in 2013, a bit banged up and not as fit as I should have been, but had a great time running with the lead pack for about 22 miles.
Kara Goucher Web Series: Episode 1 - Women's Running
Back in August 2014, Editor-in-Chief Jessie Sebor spent time with Kara Goucher to capture a day in her life as an elite runner. The experience was documented for our new web series. In episode one, Kara starts her day on the track with coach Heather Burroughs at the University of Colorado. Although she is primarily training for the marathon, this workout was focused on shorter sprints. Watch as Kara completes her workout and explains why speed is important, even for marathoners.

New Olympian Kate Grace is Going to Rio!
Kate Grace! You just won the Women's 800m Olympic Trials and are heading to RIO! How are you feeling? Balls, I’m going to Rio! Balls to the wall! But really, during that last part of the race I knew this was the time to leave it all out there. We had a plan to get on the rail, because I kept getting in trouble with people moving lanes in that last 400.
Surprise! Sally + Lauren + the Running USA Trailblazer Award
About six weeks before the Olympic Marathon Trials, Lauren Fleshman called me with some good news. She was receiving an award from Running USA – as a female leader in the sport. The 2016 Trailblazer award! Past winners included some of our heroes, including Mary Wittenberg and Tracey Russell. My reaction: duh. Such a no brainer. You, me, everyone…we all know how much this woman does for the sport, for athletes, and basically anyone she meets.
Behind the Scenes with Oiselle Hammer Thrower Britney Henry
Britney Henry is obviously unique for the fact that she is currently our only field event sponsored athlete here at Oiselle. However, why we love Britney goes way beyond her athletic accomplishments. In and out of the ring she is a ray of sunshine. For awhile we have been wanting our community to see what Britney does day in and day out, preparing to throw an 8.8 pound metal ball more than 200 feet in distance...while staying within a 7 foot diameter circle.
Kate Grace & Lauren Wallace Talk Flagstaff and Portland Twilight
After coming back from altitude training in Flagstaff, Kate and Lauren hit the track at Portland Twilight this past weekend. And yes, they brought the heat! Heather and I caught up with them pre and post race to recap on their training in Flagstaff, and get the scoop post race. Bottom line, we could not be more excited to watch these two race in the upcoming months leading into the Trials! You both just returned from training in Flagstaff! How long were you there?

We are thrilled to open new spots to our Volée Team this week! A huge high five and hello to all the women who have come on board over the past few days. We welcome you with open arms and hearts – and cannot wait to fly together! And also, some good news for those who may have missed it. We have some spots left for this opening.
The Oiselle Full Half Challenge - It's Not Just A Half
"Half" has a bad rap. Consider the following terms: With the exception of half-n-half (I mean, we all need it!), half-life (how else could we record carbon dating?), and the effective half-Nelson wrestling hold, not a lot of positivity. Except for Snape, I guess he turned out to be a good guy? The half marathon often takes an unfair backseat to the grand 26.2. Training for a half marathon is a full commitment. It’s not just a half marathon; it’s a full half marathon.
Post Olympic Marathon Trials Interview with Kara Goucher
Tell us about the race today… I talked to my coaches a lot. We just thought, “no one’s going to PR today.” Kellyn Taylor would have to PR, they’d all have to be in PR shape on this day. I promised that I wouldn’t go with any move until the 20 mile mark, and I thought, maybe I’ll regret it, but… I ran out of gas too. This past week, my family got sick. We all got sick, but honestly, I have a hard time tapering, so it probably helped me. I fumbled my second bottle.
Watch: Kara Goucher's Journey to 2016 Olympic Trials Marathon
I love how humble and truly grateful Kara is. Her love for what she does is inspiring and I'm so happy to hear that running is fun for her again. Her impact on the sport is, and will continue to be, tremendous. She has sparked a movement of confident women who run because it feels good, regardless of their competitive level. She is a role model in every sense of the term. We'll all be cheering for you on the 13th and in every other part of your storied career.
Update on Yale Partnership
Oiselle has learned that the Yale University Athletics Department has signed a 10-yr, $16 million dollar exclusive agreement with Under Armour. This agreement will supersede Oiselle's partnership with the Yale Women's Cross-Country and Track and Field teams, effective Fall of 2016. While we are deeply saddened to not be able to continue our apparel partnership beyond the summer of '16, we are and will continue to be grateful and honored to be part of the history of the Yale program.
Six Weeks to Run Love Challenge: Week Two
Welcome to week 2! Your running posture requires balance and symmetry. If you are not running symmetrically, you create natural angles that put unnecessary stress and pressure on your joints, which can lead to injury. Dedicating at least one day a week to strength training will aid in injury prevention and help to improve your overall efficiency as a runner.
