GLOUCESTER — For the 13th time in program history, Manchester Essex is headed to the girls tennis state championship. The No. 2 Hornets defeated Cape Ann League foe Ipswich, 3-2, in the Division 4 semifinals Monday at Gloucester High School. “This was the goal all year long, to get back there and take another crack at it,” said Hornets coach Barrett Alston after his squad moved to 19-2. Manchester Essex’s singles players used relentless rallies to wear down their opponents.

I would know: My son has been attending baseball and hockey games since he was 4 months old. As a sports fan and part-time sportswriter, I had to quickly draft a playbook for bringing my infant son along to the field or rink.
