Geneticists have been fascinated by autism since early twin studies found it to be a highly heritable condition (Folstein & Rutter, 1977), a finding that has been replicated many times since (Ronald & Hoekstra, 2011; Sandin et al., 2017; Tick et al., 2016). In recent years, twin studies have given way to Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS), with several major genomic autism studies launched in the last decade.
