Ten years ago, a team of researchers made a chance discovery that would overturn one of the most fundamental rules in photochemistry: that light-activated reactions work best when the wavelength used matches a photoactive molecule’s absorption maximum. The absorption maximum is essentially a photoactive molecule’s favourite wavelength of light. Here, it can ‘capture’ the biggest number of photons and, as the logic goes, therefore do the most amount of work.

First half-Möbius molecule made

Twisted structure is an unprecedented case of a compound that becomes aromatic by breaking its own symmetry Chemists have created the first-ever half-Möbius molecule. The orbitals of the 13-carbon ring twist by only a quarter turn with each circumnavigation rather than the half-twist of regular Möbius aromatics. It’s also the first example of a molecule that becomes more aromatic as it becomes less symmetric.

Fake microscopy images generated by AI are indistinguishable from the real thing

A new nanoscience paper describes an exciting new material that closely resembles a much-loved puffed corn snack. A scatter of twisted tubes, dubbed nano-cheetos, are shown in a clear electron microscopy image. The only problem: the material isn’t real. The image was made with ChatGPT, by a team of materials scientists who warn that such AI-generated images could make scientific fraud near-undetectable.
