Laurel residents attended a public hearing at Laurel High School Auditorium Thursday night to protest a psychiatric facility that would hold people going through the justice system in eastern Montana. The state is forging ahead on its choice of a property just outside Laurel city limits, despite pushback from locals concerned about public safety, staffing and other resources. Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks rolls out animal tracking radio towers

Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks recently installed the 19th of 50 radio towers planned statewide. It’s part of a global effort to install the Motus network, a wildlife tracking system with an increasing number of stations across North America. FWP Motus coordinator John Kuntz says unlike other tracking technology, the network spans thousands of miles and tags are small enough to attach to birds, bats or even insects.

Laurel residents sue state to stop forensic psychiatric facility

Residents of Laurel are suing to stop a forensic psychiatric facility proposed next to their city in southcentral Montana. Locals under the moniker Laurel CARED filed a motion for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction Thursday, June 26 in Yellowstone County district court. The group rallied together when they learned the state had chosen a site just outside city limits. The psychiatric facility would hold defendants going through the justice system.
