Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I've only freelanced so far! My first real piece was a live music review.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes I have.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Shioli Kutsuna from Sanctuary.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

For me, it's to be a story teller.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

A friendly greeting, a brief outline of what you and please, give me as much detail as possible! That way we can hit the ground running.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Laptop and good old notebook and pen!

What's your favorite social network?

I will get hate for this, but TikTok.

Who do you wish followed you?

Joe Yokomizo, he's my favourite journalist.

Why did you become a journalist?

Because I love music and writing, so it seemed the best way to combine them. I'm also beyond curious so it's a good excuse.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No, we didn't have one. I do work for my University Radio station though. I'm a presenter.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

So far, it has been my WOMADELAIDE story but I am so proud of the interviews I have been doing for Noise 'n' Visuals.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

I'm still aspiring but it is to trust your gut and your skills. There are terrible writers and people with jobs, so you are already ahead.

When's the best time to pitch you?

I am normally at my computer from 9am and try to log off by 5pm. You will get me at my best between 9-3pm and after 7pm.

What's your favorite drink?

Go to coffee order is a soy latte. If we are at a bar, it's a whiskey or lemon sour. For my degenerate side 196 or a Strong Zero.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

At a live show, drinking coffee somewhere, at the radio station or on a plane somewhere!

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

I always appreciate the work done by Wall of Sound, but PULSE has taken my fancy!

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That music journalism is easy.
